Chapter 1
INTRODUCTION

I. Introduction
Family is a single word with many different meanings. People have many ways of
defining a family and what being a part of a family means to them. What every family
has in common is that the people who call it a family are making clear that those people
are important in some way to the person calling them his family. Some teenagers can
define a family as their best friend, teacher, classmate and people who will always be
there for them. But some other teenagers defined it as their enemy, problem, heartache
and most hated people in their life because of being into a broken family.

A broken family is defined as a family that has split or separated due to a variety of
reasons that we will know in the next part of this research. Broken homes can cause
children to question their self- worth, to experience unnecessary grief, guilt and
confusion. It can affect their whole life, especially in their studies and in their emotions.
Being into a broken family gives a lot of effects in a teenager. The one who should
support and be there for them are the one who hurts their feeling. This leads to children
being raised by single parents, stepparents or others not related to the biological parents.
The study is primarily focused on the impact of broken family among the teenagers and
students. In this study, we will focus on the behavior of the students in school and how it
affected their lives. We will be stating facts and other information about the teenagers
being into a broken family. Our main point in our studies are simple, to learn about the
negative effects of being into a broken family among teenagers and anything else about
it.

the biological parents.
• Family- is the basic unit of society. This is the most essential component of a
country.

Chapter 2
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
I. Local Study
One of the biggest problem to a mother is being depressed, worried, and self-concern.
Second problem having a lowered standard of living. The concerns of being a mothers is
directly affected their children. They can't able to provide the care and other necessities
of their children as they felt they should. The study found that with women, earning
capacity proves to be a direct determinant of happiness and well-being. Women who did
not reach college and who are in the lowest income group are approximately twice as
likely to become depressed as the problem of child-raising as those who are educated and
hold high-paying, professional jobs, blue-collar women earning low income are three
times more apt to complain of lowered standards of living than those in the higher
bracket. High wage-earners, on the other hand, have a different problem. Almost a third
of them claim that their involvement with members of the opposite sex is the most trying
part of solo parenting.
Who are in process of divorce is a one of the hardes situation to be in. sometimes
happening between couple, that concerns most people. Somehow divorce is hurtful on
both partner to those who undergo, the children end up with the greatest amount of
problems. This is a challenge to a child that can develop and not always seen by the
naked eye, and do not always come to the surface right away.
II. Foreign Study
According to the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, teenagers that is raised by a
single-parent or in a blended family are three times more likely to seek a psychological
help within a given year.
Hopefully these statistics may ultimately cause you and your spouse to sincerely consider
all the cost of divorce before you make the final choice.
Based on these statistics, it becomes clear that children need secure, loving homes with
both parents. There is, of course an omission to every rule, and in this case it is
households where violence is taking place. If both of you have just "grown apart", or fell
out of love and if there is no violence enchanting place in your marriage, for your
children's sake, I advise you to seek out help for your marriage before you give up
completely.
It has been expected in the United States today that almost half of all couples that walk
down the aisle will rashly have divorce, but how about the clause "until death do us
part?"
Over time, there have been many theories obtainable as to why divorce occurs and why
these tolls have enlarged so radically over the last 30 years. Some think that the country
may take part in a role; others suppose that the span of the courtship plays an significant
piece; cohabitation preceding to wedding "increases" the chance that separation will
result; or not cohabitating prior to marriage may add as the evolution era is too stressful;
still others think that the separation progression is too simple; if laws were stricter and
divorces were further hard to get, these divorce statistics would get better over era. At
this era, although elevated, the separation tempo has decreased to some extent lessening
the minds of the American public. There is still small hope that these information will
ever diminish completely.
In this fast paced civilization that we exist in nowadays, it must to be simple for us, the
American public, to be aware of this phenomenon. The standard "American Family" has
both parents in the place of work, financial stress, job discontent, children in school
activities and sports, "high demand" lifestyles and generally small time to center on the
family's group cohesiveness. Although Waite and Lillard (1991) viewed that children,
especially young children, present and improve marital steadiness, environmental
stressors and everyday labor are often more than a parental relationship can endure.
These "standard" stressors alone can make much chaos, turmoil and in time lead to
marital damage, argument and divorce.

III. Local Literature

Anderson (2014) stated that families are the bedrock of society.Ceci, et.al, (2012)
propose that the efficacy of a family influence for academic success is determined to a
large degree by a child’s family background. Parent-child interactions are the forces that
lead to academic performance.
Analyses of the relations between families and academic achievement also need to
consider children’s family structures, such as the influence of single-parent families and
the effect of sibling structures. It is generally acknowledged that family environment is
the most powerful influence in determining a child’s academic motivation and
achievement (Corbis, 2012).

IV. Foreign Literature

In the United States, the effects of single-parent family life on children fall into two
categories: (1) those attributed to the lower socioeconomic status of single parents and (2)
the short-term consequences of divorce that moderate over time. Four factors are
predictive of U.S. children's adjustment to the divorce of their parents: the passage of
time, the quality of the children's relationship with their residential parent, the level of
conflict between parents, and the economic standing of the children's residential family.
In the first few years after a divorce, the children have higher rates of antisocial behavior,
aggression, anxiety, and school problems than children in two parent families. However,
some of these problems may be attributed to a decrease in available resources and adult
super-vision; many of the negative effects disappear when there is adequate supervision,
income, and continuity in social networks (McLanahan and Sandefur, 2013).
Johnson (2012) asserts that children of unmarried parents/separated families often
fail and are at risk emotionally.
Burton (2012) reports that a recent study by University of Notre Dame and the University
of Rochester revealed that parents’ marital problems can leave a lasting impact on their
young children. Researchers found that when young children witnessed conflict between
their parents, this eventually leads to issues in their teenage years, including depression
and anxiety.
Chapter 3
Research Methodology
This chapter outlines the research design and methodology that were used to explain and
describe the academic performance of students from broken homes.

I. Research Design
The study utilized a qualitative approach of data analysis and presentation. This assisted
the researcher to come up a fact-finding study with adequate interpretation. It utilized a
phenomenological design to find out the lived experiences of student respondents from
broken homes.

II. Research Locale

 The research was conducted Our Lady of Fatima University, Lagro, Quezon City.
 Our Lady of Fatima University, formerly known as Our Lady of Fatima College,
and also formerly known as Fatima Medical Science Foundation, Incorporated
(FMSFI) is a private university in the Philippines. It has five main campuses, one
based in Valenzuela City, the others in Quezon City, Antipolo, Rizal.,Pampanga
and the newly constructed Nueva Ecija Doctors Colleges Inc. The university
concentrates mainly on allied medical sciences. Its name was derived from The
National Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima or PambansangDambanangBirhenng
Fatima (in the Tagalog language) near the Valenzuela campus, but is not affiliated
with the Catholic Church, and welcomes students of all faiths (as do Catholic
universities).

III. Population and Sampling / Key Informant Selection
The researcher identified who among from the students in ABM 11P-5 are from broken
homes as reflected in the questionnaires given. The respondent’s age relies between 16 to
19 years old. The researcher determined the number of respondents using
convenience/accidental sampling. A total of 34 students from ABM P-5 were involved in
this study.
.

IV. Research Ethics

 Reseacher didn't forcely collect any personal background or to know the state of
their life, and expose any of the confidential statement of the respondents.
 We make sure to keep the agreement we have to the respondents.
 We observed anonymity.

V. Research Instrument
This study uses a questionnaire as an instrument in data gathering among respondents.
The researchers uses the students profile from the questionnaire in terms of age when
their family was broke. We use open and close-ended questions in able to get fact-finding
datas.

Chapter 4
Presentation, Analysis and Interpretation of Data
This chapter presents the findings of the study. The study gathered datas from ABM 11P-
5 students from OLFU,Lagro,Quezon City. Questionnaires were used in data collection.
The questionnaires utilized the open ended questions. The statements posed in the
questionnaire are shown above. As for the open ended questions, respondents either wrote
or gave their opinions by answering the given questions in the questionnaire depending
on their levels of literacy.
34 respondents were involved in the study and their responses recorded. This
presentation of data will only focused among respondents who came from broken homes.
The questions from the questionnaires were later discussed. The general objective of this
study was to find out the negative effects of having a broken family from their behavior.
