Shs Demo 2019

The document outlines a lesson plan on functions and their graphs. The objectives are for students to be able to evaluate functions. The lesson contains various activities to introduce functions, have students practice evaluating functions using different examples, and a formative assessment. The lesson plan also includes reflections on teaching strategies, student progress, and areas for improvement.

OBJECTIVES At the end of the lesson, 80% of the students should be

able to:
1. Evaluate a function
A. Content Standards The learner demonstrates understanding of key concepts
of functions.
B. Performance Standards The learner is able to accurately construct mathematical
models represent real-life situations using functions.

IV. PROCEDURES

A. Reviewing previous lesson or Activity 1: Cabbage Relay!

presenting the new lesson The teacher will form a cabbage out of metal strips with
set of ordered pairs written on it. This will be passed on
from one student to another. When the teacher says stop,
the student who catches the cabbage last will peel off one
metal strip and will identify the ordered pairs as
FUNCTION or NOT.
1. {(0,2), (1,3), (2,4), (3, 5), (4, 6)}
2. {(0, 2), (0, 4), (0, 6), (0, 8), (0, 10)}
3. {(4, -2), (5, -3), (6, -4), (7, -5)}
4. {(-2, -5), (-2, 10), (0, -1), (0, 8), (2, 9)}
5. {(2, 0), (4, 0), (5, 0), (6, 0), (7, 0)}
B. Establishing a purpose for the Activity 2: Add Me Up!
lesson Group activity: the class will be divided into three (3)
groups. Each group will select their leader, secretary and
reporter.
Each group will be given strips of paper numbered from 1
– 9. They will arrange the numbers to fill all empty squares
so that the numbers 1 – 9 appear exactly once in each
row and column. The sum of each numbers in each area
is equal to the clue in the areas top left corner.

C. Presenting examples/ instances Activity 3: Do you wanna ride?

of the new lesson Each group will be given five (5) minutes to answer the
problem below. After the given time, they will present their
work.

John rides a jeepney whenever he goes to school. He

pays Php 5 for every 1 kilometer. How much will John pay
if his house is 5 kilometers away from school?

Ask:
1. What method did you use to find the answer?

The teacher will process students’ answers.

D. Discussing new concepts and Evaluating Functions:
practicing To evaluate a function, substitute the input (the given
new skills #1 number or expression) for the function’s variable (place
holder, x).

Replace the x with the given number or expression.

1. Given the function f(x) = 3x – 5, find f(4).
Solution: Substitute 4 into the function in place of x.
f(4) = 3(4) – 5 = 7.

2. Find the value of h(b) = 3b2 – 2b + 1 when b = -3.

Solution: Substitute -3 into the function in place of b.
h(-3) = 3(-3)2 – 2(-3) + 1 = 34

3. Find g(2w) when g(x) = x2 – 2x + 1

Solution: When substituting expressions, like 2w, into a
function, using parenthesis will help prevent algebraic
errors. For this problem, use (2w).
g(2w) = (2w)2 – 2(2w) + 1 = 4w2 – 4w + 1
E. Discussing new concepts and Activity 4: Solve Me!
practicing new skills #2 Direction: Evaluate the following function.
1. f(x) = 2x + 4, find f(-3)
2. f(g) = 4g2 – 9g + 3, find f(-1)
1
3. f(p) = 2𝑝, find f(4)

F. Developing mastery Activity 5: Let’s Practice!

(Leads to Formative Direction: Evaluate the following function.
Assessment 3) 1. f(x) = x – 9, find f(-6)
2. f(s) = s2 + 5, find f(0)
3𝑤
3. f(w) = , find f(-3)
4

G. Finding practical applications of Activity 6: Individual Activity

concepts and skills in daily Present the problem below to the students.
living
William is a farmer in Mambusao, Capiz. The number of
sacks he harvested every cropping is given by the
function f(s) = 11s + 8, where s is the number of sacks of
fertilizer he applied. What is the number of sacks William
harvested if he applied 8 sacks of fertilizer?

The teacher will process students’ answer.

H. Making generalizations and Ask:
abstractions about the lesson How do we evaluate function?

I. Evaluating learning Test Yourself!

Direction: Evaluate the following function.
1. f(x) = x2 – x – 4, find f(0)
2𝑔+1
2. f(g) = 𝑔−2 , find f(2)
3𝑦
3. f(y) = 𝑦+2, find f(2)
𝑎2 +𝑎−6
4. f(a) = 𝑎+7 , find f(-5)
5. Carla is a SHS student enrolled in a TVL - Cookery
class. The number of cakes she could baked is defined
by the function f(c) = 3c + 5, where c is the number of
cups of flour. How many cakes she can bake if she has
13 cups of flour?
J. Additional activities for In your interactive notebook, create at least 3 examples
application or remediation of real-life situation using function.
