Assignment - Hydraulics: Weir Problems

This document contains 7 problems related to calculating flow rates using various types of weirs under different conditions. The problems involve determining weir placement, dimensions, flow rates, and head given variables like channel width, flow volume, and weir coefficients. The final problem asks to determine the angle of a triangular weir to achieve a specific ratio of flow rates between two irrigation channels.

Assignment - Hydraulics

Weir Problems

1. A channel conveys 300 litres/sec of water. At the outlet end there is a 90-degree V-notch
weir for which the weir coefficient is 0.58. At what distance above the bottom of the channel should
the weir be placed in order to make the depth in the channel 1.30m? With the weir in this position
what is the depth of water in the channel when the flow is 200 litres/sec?

2. A sharp crested rectangular weir is 2 m long. (a) Calculate the height of the weir to pass a
flow of 1.10 m3/s while maintaining an upstream depth of 1.20 m. (b) If the channel is widened to
3.0 m (of which the weir length remains the same and its notch positioned at the center of the
channel), determine the resulting head on the weir assuming the same discharge rate.

3. The head on a sharp crested rectangular weir 1.20 m long and 0.90 m high is 10 cm. a)
Calculate the discharge without and with the velocity of approach and (b) what is the velocity of
approach.

4. A suppressed rectangular weir is fitted in a 2.5 m channel. Calculate the discharge over the
weir when the water surface elevations on the upstream and downstream of the weir, measured
from the weir crest, are respectively, 0.60 m and 0.30 m. A constant value of weir coefficient
(referred as coefficient of discharge, Cd in other books), Cd = 0.62 can be assumed.

5. A rectangular weir in a channel is known to have carried 60 L/s under a head of 30 cm

when flowing free. If it is submerged with water surface elevation at 50 cm and 30 cm above the
crest on the upstream and downstream of the weir respectively, estimate the discharge in the
channel. Assume that the weir coefficients remain the same under different flow conditions.

6. The discharge over a weir could be expressed as Q = KHn where the H is the head over the
weir and K and n are constants. It was found out that the discharge was 7.48 m3/s and 3.84 m3/s
when the head was 2.0 m and 1.25 m, respectively. Calculate (a) the discharge over the weir for a
head of 1.50 m and (b) head required to pass a discharge of 2.5 m3/s.

7. Water flows over a 5-ft wide rectangular sharp-crested weir that is P = 4.5 ft tall. If the
depth upstream is 5 ft, determine the flow rate.

8. Water flows from a storage tank, over two triangular weirs, and into two irrigation channels
as shown in the figure below. The head for each weir is 0.40 ft and the flow rate in the channel fed
by the 90 degree V-notch weir is to be twice the flow rate in the other channel. Determine the angle
(theta) for the second weir.
