The 2,500 m2 four-storey structure that first open its door on early March 2009, serves as a tribute to
the 230,000 victims of one of the most devastating natural disasters in recent history – which names are
to be memorial, the museum also designed to be an “escape hill” for locals in event of another tsunami.

Acehnese people.

To commemorate the 2005 tsunami in Aceh, he built a Tsunami Museum at the scene. Historical
museum was inaugurated by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in late February 2009. As told by its
designer, M Ridwan Kamil, the museum should be a symbol of the anti tsunami structure, namely a
combination of building a raised platform (elevated building) on top of a hill.

Furthermore, he said, the choice of the stage building is inspired by traditional Acehnese houses on stilts
which proved resistant to natural disasters. While the concept is taken from the concept of the hill hill
rescue (escape hill) in case a tsunami occurs in the future.

In designing the museum, he tried to respond to some important aspects in the design such as: the
memory of the events of the tsunami disaster, the functionality of a museum / memorial, cultural
identity of the people of Aceh, a new aesthetic that is modern and responsive to the urban context.

Tsunami Museum magnificent building from the outside looks like a large ship at anchor. While at the
bottom there is a fish pond. This museum is the only one in Indonesia and possibly a tsunami will be the
museum world.
The design concept

Some basic concepts that affect the design of the Tsunami Museum are: Acehnese traditional house, hill
rescue (escape hill); sea wave (sea waves), a typical dance of Aceh (saman dance), Lord of light (the light
of God) and gardens to the public (public park).

As presented Ridwan Kamil, Tsunami Memorial design takes the basic idea of the stage house Aceh as it
can for example architectural wisdom of the past in responding to the challenges and natural
disasters. Similarly, the shape of the hill penyelelamatan in anticipation of building a tsunami hazard in
the future.

As for the building that resembles a sketch of the ocean waves, it is an analogy and as a reminder of the
dangers of tsunamis. While the concept of a typical dance of Aceh that exist in the building, according to
Emil as a symbol of solidarity and cooperation among human beings which is then translated into the
exterior building skin.

Inside the building there is also a well-shaped space that shined the light cylinder to the top as a symbol
of man’s relationship with the Lord. Do not miss it also built a park open to the public which can be
accessed and used at any time in response to the urban context.
To evoke old memories of the tragedy of the tsunami. The layout of the room in the museum specially
designed. Emil explained that the sequence (sequence) space in buildings that visitors must go through
carefully designed. This is to produce a complete psychological effects on the human perception of the
tsunami disaster. To realize the space is designed in three zones namely: spaces of memory; spaces of
spaces of hope and relief.

In the spaces of memory zone is realized in the tsunami passage and Memorial Hall.Reception area
(tsunami passage) in the museum is a high-walled narrow corridor with a thundering waterfalls to
remind how scary atmosphere at the time of the tsunami. While the Memorial Hall is an area in the
basement that becomes an interactive means to commemorate the history of the tsunami. In the Aceh
Memorial Hall is also equipped with lighting of the holes of a reflecting pool that was on it.

While in the zone spaces of hope embodied in the form of Blessing of Hope Chamber and the
Atrium. Blessing Chamber is a transition space before entering the rooms non memorial activities. This
space is a high with thousands of wells that the names of victims inscribed on the wall. The well is
illuminated by a circular skylight with calligraphy Allah SWT as meaning the presence of hope for the
people of Aceh.

While the atrium of hope in the form of a large atrium space as a symbol of hope and optimism towards
a better future. Visitors will use the ramp across the pond and atrium to sense the mood of
relief. Atrium with pool refelecting can visually diaskes anytime but can not pass the physical.

Spaces for the zone of relief translated into the hill of light and escape roof. The hill of light is a small hill
garden as a means of beginning to tsunami relief. Public park is equipped with hundreds of torches are
also poles designed to lay flowers as a sign of mourning personal space. If all the torches lit the hill will
be flooded by a sea of light. Very personal as well as communal. Roof is a roof escape being designed
