DOME Internal Test 1 Question Paper

The document contains an internal test for a design of machine elements course. It includes 4 questions: 1) designing a sleeve and cotter joint to withstand loads, 2) calculating the diameter of a shaft transmitting power, 3) designing a flange coupling, and 4) listing factors affecting material selection. The questions provide specifications for stresses, power transmitted, speeds, and loads to complete the design problems.

Internal Test II
Design of Machine Elements

Answer All questions

1. Design sleeve and cotter joint which is required to withstand a load of 50 kN in tension and
compression. The material used for the cotter joint has following allowable stress values-
Allowable stress in tension =80 MPa, Shear Stress =85 Mpa, Crushing stress=110 Mpa [15]
2. A shaft made up of mild steel is required to transmit 40KW at 900 rpm. The supported length of
the shaft is 4meter. It carries two pulleys each weighing 2.5KN supported at a distance of 1
meter from the both end respectively. The permissible shear stress is 60N/mm 2. Find the
diameter of the shaft. (15)
3. Design a flange coupling to transmit 20 KW at 250 rpm. The service factor is 1.2. The allowable
shear stress for shaft, key and bolt is 40N/mm2. The crushing stress in key and bolt is
110N/mm2.The shear stress for cast iron is 15N/mm2. (15)
4. List any five factors affecting selection of materials. [5]
