Ag Layer in Sub-Base/Base Construction 1. Scope

This document outlines the specifications for constructing an aggregate (AG) layer in sub-base and base construction. The AG layer will be constructed using crushed stone aggregates that meet grading and quality requirements. The material will be uniformly spread and compacted to at least 98% maximum density. Compaction will be achieved using rollers weighing 80-100KN. Quality control measures will ensure the work meets specifications. Traffic management will be provided during construction.

AG LAYER IN SUB-BASE/BASE CONSTRUCTION

1. Scope:

This item of work shall deal with construction of AG layer with approved materials as per the
specifications of contract agreement.

This item shall consist of finishing, placing and compacting crushed stone aggregates for sub base
and base course constructed in accordance with the requirements of MoRTH specifications and in
conformity with lines, grades, thickness and cross sections as on the plan.

2. Material:

The material to be used for the work shall be crushed rock. If crushed gravel/shingle is used not
less than 90% by weight of gravel pieces retained on 4.75mm sieve shall have at least two
fracture faces. It shall be free from organic matter and shall be of such nature that it can be
compacted readily under watering and rolling to form a firm stable base. The aggregate shall
confirm the grading and quality requirements in Table 400.12 and 400.13 of MoSRTH
specifications of Road and bridge works.

3. Construction Operation:

Preparation of Sub Grade:

Any ruts, deformation or soft yield places which occur in the sub base and sub grade shall be
corrected and compacted to the required density before the aggregate base course is placed.

Spreading, watering, Mixing, and Compaction:

The aggregate shall be uniformly deposited on the approved sub grade by means of vehicle with
spreading devices. Aggregate will be distributed over the surface to the depth specified in the
plan.
After the base course material has been deposited it shall be thoroughly blade mix to full depth of
the layer. The AG layer material shall be prepared in a approved mixing plant of suitable capacity
having controlled addition of water mixing arrangement like pug mill as per clause 406.3.3 of
MoSRTH specifications.

Compaction:

Compaction shall commence immediately after the spreading operation. If the thickness of single
layer does not exceed 100mm a smooth wheel roller of 80 to 100 KN weight may be used. For
compacted a single layer up to 200mm the compaction shall be done with the help of vibratory
roller of static weight 80 to 100 KN or equivalent capacity roller. The speed of roller shall not
exceed 5km/hr. Each layer of material shall be compacted to not less than 98 % of maximum
density as determined by IS 2720 part-8.

regulations as mentioned in HSE PLAN.

7. Quality assurance and quality control

Quality Assurance & Quality Control of this work shall be as per Quality Assurance Manual
and corresponding Quality Assurance Plan. All quality records as appended to this
procedure shall be maintained in appropriate formats.

8. Traffic

As per the standard construction practices necessary traffic management measures shall be
provided viz. signs, marking flags, lights and flagmen. Fixed signs, barriers and other traffic
control devices shall be maintained in a satisfactory condition till such time they are
