INTRODUCTION
The vortex effect is a phenomenon related to the flow of fluids generated in compressible and uncompressible fluids and where a turbulent
flow is developed in spiral trajectory.
The vortex tube, or Ranque-Hilsch tube, is a unit mainly employed in industrial refrigeration, although not dismissing the use of the hot air
also generated. Nowadays, we can find examples of the use of a vortex tube in metallurgy and foundry, welding, production of plastics,
sealing and even in the increment of the efficiency by cooling in chemical reactors and tanks.
In the Computer Controlled Vortex Tube Refrigerator Unit, “TPVC”, the vortex effect is developed in a tube where the air spreads quickly by
a distributor that provides a rotary motion, dividing the air into a cold current and a hot current that leave through opposite ends.
The unit allows to observe and study the vortex phenomenon, which demonstrates the generation of two air currents, a cold and a hot
one, to analyze the influence of the air properties at the inlet in both currents and to represent the different efficiency curves, setting fluid
mechanics and heat transmission concepts.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Computer Controlled Vortex Tube Refrigerator Unit, “TPVC”, is a unit designed to study the physical, mechanical and thermodynamic
characteristics of a vortex tube.
This unit works with compressed air. The air, previously filtered to remove impurities, passes through a vortex tube, being possible to
regulate the pressure of the inlet air and vary its temperature (these variables are measured before entering the vortex tube):
To study the influence of the inlet pressure variation it is possible to regulate the pressure with a computer controlled electronic valve up
to the maximum pressure set in the filter before.
To study the influence of the inlet temperature variation it is possible to vary the temperature with a concentric tubes heat exchanger,
where the inlet current is cooled down or heated.
Air enters the vortex tube tangentially and rotating very quickly, as a result a cold air flow and a hot air flow are generated inside the vortex
tube. They leave the tube by opposite ends, where there are two regulation valves to vary these air flows (cold fraction).
Hot air obtained at one end is measured by a flow sensor and its characteristics can be determined by a temperature sensor, a pressure
sensor and a manometer. This air, with the suitable arrangement of the valves, can be either released or introduced into the heat exchanger
to give its heat to the air current entering the vortex tube.
The cold current is obtained at the other end of the tube. It is also measured by a flow sensor, a temperature sensor, a pressure sensor and
a manometer and it can also be recyled or not.
Several exchangeable vortex generators (nozzles) with different internal diameter are included.
This Computer Controlled Unit is supplied with the EDIBON Computer Control System (SCADA), and includes: The unit itself + a
Control Interface Box + a Data Acquisition Board + Computer Control, Data Acquisition and Data Management Software Packages, for
controlling the process and all parameters involved in the process.
