1. Preparation of Test Specimen:


a) Clean the specimen with suitable method depending upon nature of the
surface & contaminant. Avoid corrosive. Abrasive material for surface cleaning.
Care shall be taken that specimens are not re-contaminated after cleaning by
excessive or careless handling.
b) Dip the specimen/ panel (Q-Panel S-36) in test oil & hang for 10 min to allow
dripping of excess oil.
c) Allow for drying of the oil film on the specimen for 1 hour.

2. Position of specimen during test:


a) The specimen shall be supported or suspended between 15 and 30 deg from
the vertical & preferably parallel to the principal direction of horizontal flow of
fog through the chamber, based upon the dominant surface being tested.
b) The specimen should not contact each other or any metallic material or any
material capable of acting as a wick.
c) Each specimen shall be so placed as to permit free settling of fog on all
specimens.
d) Salt solution from one specimen shall not drip on any other specimen.

3. Salt Solution:
a) The salt solution shall be prepared by dissolving 5 + 1 part by weight of Sodium
chloride in 95 parts of water conforming to Type IV water in specification D1193.
b) The pH of salt solution shall be such that when atomized at 35 deg C, the
collected solution will be in the pH range 6.5 – 7.2. Before the solution is atomized,
it shall be free of suspended solids.
4. Air Supply:
a) The compressed air supply to the nozzles, for atomizing the salt shall be free from
oil & dirt and maintained between 69 & 172 kN/m2.

5. Conditions in the Salt Spray Chamber:


a) Temperature: The exposure zone of the salt spray chamber shall be maintained
at 35 + 1.1 – 1.7 deg C. The temperature within the exposure zone should be
recorded at least twice a day.
b) Atomization & quantity of fog: At least 2 clean fog collectors shall be so placed
within the exposure zone that no drops from the solution from the test specimens
or any other source shall be collected. The fog shall be such that for each 80
cm2 of horizontal collecting area there will be collected in each collector from
1 – 2 ml of solution per hour on an average of at least 16 hrs.
c) The nozzles shall be so directed or baffled that none of the spray can impinge
directly on the test specimens.

6. Continuity of test:
a) Unless otherwise specified in the specification covering the material or product
being tested, the test shall be continuous for the duration of entire test period.
Continuous operation implies that the chamber be closed and the spray

operating continuously except for the short daily interruptions necessary to


inspect, rearrange or remove the test specimen, to check & replenish the
solution in the reservoir.

7. Period of test: The period of test shall be as designated by the specification


covering the material or product being tested or as mutually agreed.

8. Evaluation of Results: A careful & immediate examination shall be made for


the extent of corrosion in terms of % surface area of the test specimens or for
other failure as required by the specification covering the material or product
being tested as noted.

9. Records & Reports:


The following information’s shall be recorded.
a) Type of water & salt used in preparing the salt solution
b) All readings of the temperature within the exposure zone.
c) Daily record of data obtained from each fog collecting device including,
volume of salt collected in mm per hr per 80 cm2., Sp. Gr at 35 deg c & pH of
the solution collected.
d) Type of specimen & its dimension or number or description of part.
e) Method of cleaning specimen before & after testing.
f) Method of supporting or suspending article in the salt spray chamber.
g) Interruptions in test, cause & length of time.
h) Exposure period & Results of all inspections.

10. Examination of results:


a) Remove the panels at the completion of the specified time from chamber,
examine each one under visual inspection for pass or failure as follows.
b) Consider the significant area, as indicated in the of Q side of panel as a separate
test surface as indicated in point 11.

Pass—A test surface shall pass if it contains no more than three dots of rust,
no one of which is larger than 1 mm in diameter.
