CURRICULUM AND LEARNING

SHARE IT & MMK

Due to the huge population of Wenceslao Trinidad Memorial National High

School, there are students who have difficulties in basic literacy. Therefore reading
program both in English and Filipino had been implemented to help the students who
have reading difficulties in terms of Word recognition and Comprehension. Under
SCOUTERS ROCK, it “enables every school-aged child and youth to benefit from high
quality basic education services”.

SHARE IT (Support & Help Achieve Reading Efficiency: Inculcating Texts) is a

reading program initiated by the English Department while MMK (Magbasa, Maging
Kakaiba) is its counterpart in Filipino which started on school year 2014-2015. These
aim to augment the reading difficulties of the students. Both English and Filipino
teachers teach students who were identified as slow and non-readers.

Different reading activities were conducted to aid students who have difficulties
in reading and to build and further develop sufficient reading skills through SHARE IT
and MMK.

SHARE IT: INITIAL READING ASSESSMENT (IRA)

It is very important to identify the reading ability of the students before formally
starting the lessons. Hence, the English teachers spent times in identifying the reading
level of the students. It is being done though the Initial Reading Assessment (IRA). The
students read a particular text, then the teacher noted the errors committed by the
students.

Based on the result of the initial reading assessment, the students were classified
into four categories: Capacity, Frustration, Instructional, and Independent. It also aims
to determine the students who need to undergo the reading remediation program. The
results revealed that there are 84 students who need reading remediation.
SHARE IT: PHONICS IN READING (PHOREAD)

After identifying the reading level of all the students through the Initial Reading
Assessment, the students who were poor in oral reading (Capacity Level) went through
the Phonics in Reading (PHOREAD). The reading tutors focused on teaching sounds of
the alphabet as the foundation of beginning reading. It is a good way to develop the
reading skills of the students especially the capacity readers.

SHARE IT: Enhancement on Reading Phrases and Sentences (ERPS)

Enhancement on Reading Phrases and Sentences (ERPS) is a reading activity

which served as a great way for the struggling readers to enhance their reading skills. It
is very helpful in a sense that students learn from simple to complex words. They read
simple words first before reading phrases. Then, to have more improvements in
reading, the given phrases were used in a sentence while the readers read it with
confidence and understanding.
SHARE IT: Practice Reading with Comprehension (PRC)

The English teachers engaged the students in reading activity called Practice
Reading with Comprehension (PRC).
It is an activity wherein the Grade 7 students were grouped according to their
reading level. Then, the English teachers guided and practiced them to read with
comprehension. It is being done during Monday and Wednesday, 2:45 to 3:45 pm.
On the other hand, all students of Grade 8 to 10 had this program during their
reading time with their adviser.

SHARE IT: Read-Ask-Write (RAW)

The reading comprehension level of the struggling readers was tested when they
were engaged in the RAW (Read-Ask-Write) activity.
This activity includes three steps: The first step is to read loudly, clearly and slowly
the passage that the students have chosen. Second step is to let them ask questions.
These questions were able to help them identify the main ideas and the key details of
the particular section that they have read. The last step is to let them write information in
their own words. After they have identified all the main ideas and key details of the
lesson, they reframed the details in their own words.

MMK: Panimulang Pagbasa

The Filipino teachers worked together in MMK’s Panimulang Pagbasa to identify

the reading level of the students and to determine who among them need to undergo
reading remediation program.

MMK: Bigkasin, Unawain!

Bigkasin, Unawain is a reading activity conducted for the identified non-readers.

The reading program coordinator focused on teaching the students on how to recognize
letters as the first step in learning to read. Different materials such as poster,
chalkboard, and notebook to write or display the alphabet were used.
MMK: Gawaing 4Ps (Pagbasa, Pagkilala, Pagpapakahulugan, Pag-unawa)

The struggling readers were engaged in Gawaing 4Ps to improve their

vocabulary and reading comprehension skills. In this activity, they were given story
books with different unfamiliar vocabularies. The reading tutor assisted the students by
teaching them on how to use context clues in understanding the texts.

MMK: Kakayahan sa Wika’y Linangin (KWL)

Kakayahan sa Wika’y Linangin (KWL) is another reading activity which enhanced

the reading comprehension skills of the students. The objective of this activity is to
enable the students determine the meaning of the word by giving synonyms. Through
this, they can easily understand the text they are reading.

The aforementioned reading remediation program and activities under SHARE IT

and MMK have a great impact on the students’ reading skills. It can be said that the
reading remediation during the school year 2018-2019 has ended fruitfully. There was
an improvement in the students reading skills and performance. Out of 84 struggling
readers, 51 have improved their reading skills. Thus, 33 students will still undergo the
reading remediation program next school year. The reading program coordinators
together with the English and Filipino teachers motivated the students to do their best
and keep on reading.
WTMNHS was awarded as Most Effective School Reading Program
Implementer Finalist during the 2019 Gawad Balisong held at Lima Park Hotel, Malvar
Batangas.
