journalism at the year of 1995 in Webster University. Silverblatt identifies five fundamental
elements of media literacy and later on it added three more elements. The seven
elements is all about.
Critical Thinking
An understanding of the process of mass communication.
Awareness of the impact of media on the individual and society.
The development of strategies with which to discuss and analyze media
messages.
An awareness of media context as a “text” that provides insight into our
contemporary culture and ourselves.
The development of a greater enjoyment, understanding and appreciation of
media content.
In the case of media developers, the ability to create effective and responsible
media messages.
Media literacy emphasizes these following elements which will be discussed by the
reporter of this classroom.
Critical Thinking
It allows the audiences or individuals to develop independent judgements
about media content. In 21st century, we must know what are the primary
and secondary sources gathered. Individuals should identify what are the
facts and what are the fake ones. To know what was true and what are the
fake ones we should consider these things. The author which shows
information of that individual, the date which shows the time and year of
published e-books or any journals gathered with used of internet the
domain which shows different domains such as ”.com, .org, .net”. And lastly
is the sources which shows an article if it is legitimate or credible ones.
Understanding of the process of mass communication
If individuals know the process, then they will form an expectations on how
media will serve individuals. It shows what the media obligations to the
individuals, media will show different media limit and the enhancement of
different messages and which forms of feedback are more effective.
The content shows the different elements of media literacy, which are having seven of it.
Created by media scholar Art Silverblatt a PhD professor of communication and
journalism in Webster University identifies the different elements such as critical thinking
which is all about independent judges that individuals needs to develop, understanding
the process of ass communications which talks about how media industries operate the
use of media itself. The awareness of impact of media on individual and society which is
all about how mass media will change society. The strategies for analyzing that is all
about meaning, we must possess tools with which to make fit with it. The media content
that provides the insight of the different culture that we know how we perceive the cultural
differences itself. The ability to enjoy and appreciate the media content, which we
perceive just like how we enjoy or appreciate things. And lastly the development of
responsible production skills which media became professions that now employ in this
century , either way to use it for training, enhancing preparations of presentations and to
keep in touch with the audience/clients or costumers.
We must somehow possess these different elements of media literacy and we will come
up with it naturally since we are currently in the advance technology. Meaning the media
will grow accordingly. By the media or technology grows, we consumers or individuals
enhances also in terms of this kind of literacy. What media literacy means is that we
somehow have or lack. Those who have it enhance themselves to become more literate
with it and those who don’t have still pursuing it for some reason so that they will not
becoming leaving behind.
