Activity 1

The document describes a student activity analyzing the relationship between rainfall amounts and fawn survival rates among Sonoran pronghorn populations over 8 years based on provided data. The student is asked to create a double bar/line graph illustrating the effects of rainfall on fawn survival, and answer questions about trends observed and how rainfall and other biotic and abiotic factors influence fawn populations.

Activity 1.4: Graphing Rainfall and Fawn Survival

Directions: Use the provided data table below to construct a graph that illustrates the effects rainfall has on
the amount of fawn that are able to survive.

Year Rainfall Fawns surviving to

(cm) December (fawns per 100
females)
1995 11 12
1996 3 0
1997 4 0
1998 19 32
1999 6 0
2000 5 15
2001 15 78
2002 2 9

-Complete and label the scale on the x-axis

-Complete and label the scale on the y-axis
-Title your graph and create a key
-Draw a bar graph for the rainfall data
-Draw a line graph for the fawn data
Questions:

1. How did the amount of rain change over time?

-Every two years it would rain a good amount

2. How did the survival rate of Sonoran fawns change over time?
-When ever it rained the fawns would increase.

3. What is the relationship between rainfall and fawn survival?

-AS long as it rained there was a good amount of fawns.

4. What effect could these changes have on the Sonoran pronghorn population (recall that fawns are baby
pronghorn)?
-Other animals could also be affect since the fawns aren’t being able to grow enough
to feed bigger predators, the number of Sonoran predators could decrease.

5. What other biotic and abiotic factors could be affecting the survival rate of the fawns?

Name two biotic factors: - Wolves eating them - humans hunting them.

Explain how these two biotic factors influence the survival rate of the fawns.
-These biotic factors decrease the number of fawns due to the fact that they hunting
fawns often.

Name two abiotic factors: - Drought - Protection

Explain how these two biotic factors influence the survival rate of the fawns.
-If fawns don’t have rain or protection they will definitely decrease due to the fact
that they aren’t getting the necessary things to survive.
