ANSI Z1.4 Sampling and Inspection Tables, 'How To Guide'

This document provides tables to determine sample sizes for quality inspections based on lot or batch size and desired confidence levels. It includes a table with sample size code letters corresponding to lot sizes, and acceptance quality limit (AQL) tables showing the required sample sizes and acceptance criteria for different inspection levels ranging from nearly zero to high levels of acceptable nonconformities. A 4-step process is outlined to use the tables to determine the appropriate sample size and acceptance criteria for a given inspection job.

1) Identify the number of bottles in the job to be repacked.
2) Look to the right and identify the corresponding sampling size code letter
3) Referencing the sampling size code letter, identify the number of samples to be inspected
Using AQL Table (next tab; Acceptable Quality Limits (AQL's) find the sampling size code letter, the required
4) sample size is identifed in the column to the right.
5) Inspect number of bottles identifed in the AQL sample size; chipped, broken or cracked finish.
6) Acceptable Quality Limit (AQL) = Zero defects
