Summary of The Lecture by Bjarke Ingels: Form Giving

Bjarke Ingels discussed form giving in architecture and design. He explained that architects can identify moments of change in the world and give form to the future. He described three of his projects: a high school in Copenhagen with an innovative handball court and social space, a sculpture park in Norway where the museum acts as a bridge, and the Lego Museum designed based on Lego blocks. Ingels also discussed hedonistic sustainability, planning for different climates, architectural alchemy through mixing programs, improving social infrastructure, and lessons from people living in extreme climates.

SUMMARY OF THE LECTURE BY BJARKE INGELS

FORM GIVING
In the design process, the most crucial part in making the product appearance outstanding is during form creation.

In Danish the word for design means to give form to something that has not yet been given form so when the world is
changing when there's some transformation happening and that transformation often comes from technology but it
sometimes comes from immigration it can be climate change and hippie culture change it can be demographic change
it could be financial change, economic change

There's new kinds of people new kinds of cultures emerging and then if we as architects can be observant and identify
those moments where changes happen we actually have an opportunity to give form to the future

THREE PROJECTS DISCUSSED

1. His own High school in Copenhagen

In this project, which is extension of his own school, they have to design a handball court.

Figure 2 They designed it under the courtyard of the school.

Figure 4 Innovative social space at the surface for the children to

play, interact

2. Sculpture Park in Norway

Turned a museum into a bridge so that part of the journey when you walk through the sculpture park you'll
arrive into their museum the skylights of the sculpture gallery it becomes panoramic windows overlooking the
mill and then you continue your journey.

3. Lego Museum

The building is designed according to the shape of the lego blocks onsidering various other factors such as
ambient light etc.

HEDONISTIC SUSTAINABILITY
The example for this hedonistic sustainability is the Payne’s pavilion at Shanghai. Through this project hE is explaining
the sustainable aspects of City design i.e. Specified Bicycle lanes and Clean Water which is not only important for the
aquatic life but is also very important for our survival

PLANNING ACCORDING TO CLIMATE

In Tropical Climate, the maximum views in the daylight and minimizing the thermal exposure is very important. This can
be achieved with the simple geometry of the Facade. By doing this we can reduce the energy consumption of the
building by 30% i.e no specific technology is used and still the thermal consumption of the building was reduced.
ARCHITECTURAL ALCHEMY

Architectural Alchemy i.e by mixing traditional programmes in untraditional ways we can create something with added
valium. He is quoting the example of one of his project in which the concept of courtyard was merged with the concept
of a skyscraper, the architectural form that was created is not much explored by us.

SOCIAL INFRASTRUCTURE
Social infrastructure generally create some negative spaces but with Clean Technology and environmentally progressive
technology negative impacts of the Social Infrastructure can be reduced to a great extent. For example if making a
bridge will create some kind of negative spaces but with technology these can be changes into positive spaces.

LESSONE FROM PEOPLE LIVING IF EXTREME CLIMATES

Tunisia desert which seems to be a lifeless desert is actually an inhabited place. It has Underground structure to protect
from the extreme hot weather conditions

Another example could be the Arizona and Canyone lands have people living in rock cut houses

Similarly Arctic Region is also very cold and people are living in igloos using the insulating properties of snow.
