DESIGN OF RETAINING WALL : 10 m HEIGHT

1.0. Introduction:

The Retaining Wall is designed as a cantilever type retaining wall. As per IRC Specifications, the following
forces are considered for analysis
1. Self weight of the wall.
2. Active earth pressure.
3. Live load surcharge.

1.1. Data:

Height of Retaining wall H = 10.4 m

Total surcharge including live load surcharge = 1.2 m of backfill

Angle of internal friction of the soil Ø = 30 ˚

Angle of friction between the fill & wall face δ = 20 ˚

Angle between surface of fill & horizontal plane = 0˚

Inclination of the wall to the vertical α = 0˚

6.2. Design for Shear:

Critical section for shear is at a distance d from face of support
Critical section from support is at = 0.371 m
Effective depth at section X-X = 295.2 mm
Net base pressure at section X-X = 159.97 kN/m2

Design bending moment at X = 12.18 kN-m
As per 304.7.1.1.2 of IRC 21 - 2000
Shear stress τv = (V- (M tanβ/d))/b*d = 0.196 N/mm2
