Respect for Diversity

Concepts of Diversity

The concept of diversity encompasses acceptance and respect

Being respectful mean understanding that each individual is unique, and recognizing our
individual differences.

These can be along the dimension of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic
status, age, physical abilities, religious beliefs, political beliefs or other ideologies

It is the exploration of all these differences in a safe, positive and nurturing environment

It is about understanding each other and moving beyond simple tolerance to embracing and
celebrating the rich dimension of diversity contained with each individual.

Situation

As a member of the Equity and diversity council of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency

I have supported and contributed to raising diversity awareness at the agency and also facilitated
an inclusive work and corporate culture initiatives that re-enforce the guiding principles of
fairness, dignity and respect

Action

I have met and interacted with colleague from different parts of the world within the agency,
especially new hires in order to help them feel comfortable without feeling of isolation often
experienced when someone is in a new environment

I have treated my colleagues with respect by showing genuine interest and willingness to learn
from their knowledge and experience

When dealing with my co-workers, I’m professional, honest and proactive; I respect the right of
others and treated co-worker with courtesy, respect and dignity

I do not involve in activities that result in bullying, harassment or disrespect


Result

Resulted in a friendly, productive workplace

Improved productivity

Fresh ideas and perspectives

Improved CFIA’s image and ability to compete globally
