CHARLES

Charles' law states that the volume of a gas is proportional to its absolute temperature when pressure is held constant. Doubling the temperature of a gas doubles its volume as long as pressure and amount remain unchanged. The formula Vi/Ti = Vf/Tf shows the relationship between initial and final volume and temperature of a gas sample. For example, a 600mL sample of nitrogen heated from 27°C to 77°C at constant pressure will increase to a final volume of 700mL according to the formula and calculations shown.

CHARLES’ LAW

Charles' law is a special case of the ideal gas law where the pressure of a

gas is constant. Charles' law states the volume is proportional to the absolute

temperature of a gas at constant pressure. Doubling the temperature of gas

doubles its volume, so long as the pressure and quantity of the gas are unchanged.

It can be shown in the formula below:

Vi/Ti = Vf/Tf

where

Vi and Ti is the initial volume and temperature

Vf and Tf is the final volume and temperature

Example:
A 600 mL sample of nitrogen is heated from 27 °C to 77 °C at constant pressure. What
is the final volume?
Step 1
Convert the given temperature to absolute temperature by adding 273.
T= 27 °C + 273 T= 77 °C + 273
T= 300 K T= 350 K
Step 2
Use the formula of the Charles’ law to find the missing variable.
Vi/Ti = Vf/Tf

Step 3

Substitute the values of the different variables and solve the problem.

600ml/300 K= Vf/350 K (cross multiply the values)

(600 ml)(350 K) =300 kVf

210 000 ml.K= 300 kVf (divide both side by 300 K to find the final volume)

700 ml= Vf
