Sports are an important part of life and culture. National Sports Day of India is celebrated
every year on 29 August in honour of late Indian hockey player Dhyan Chand.
Sports help in overall well being of a person. Not only is sports good for physical health, it is also a
great stress reliever. Participating in sports leaves a person feeling energetic and fresh. Sports
contribute to good health and there are many other benefits of sports. It is great that our country has
chosen a day dedicated to sports. Dhyan Chand was an exceptionally talented Indian hockey player
who impressed a lot of people and even achieved fame internationally. This is a special day to
remember him.
Hockey has always been one of the popular games in our country. Dhyan Chand was an Indian
hockey player who won a lot of laurels and medals for our country. The Dhyan Chand Award is
named after him. He was considered to be one of the greatest players of all time. He was born in
Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh and passed away in a hospital in Delhi. The Dhyan Chand National Stadium
has been built in his memory at New Delhi. This legendary hockey player made India proud on not
one but many occasions. He has won three Olympic gold medals. He is one of the greatest
sportspersons our country has produced. His excellent playing techniques and tactics earned him a
lot of praise. He was given the nickname ‘Chand’ by some players because he used to practice often
at night after the moon was out. Even in his last days, he talked about hockey. 29th August is the birth
anniversary of this legendary player and our country has honoured him by marking it as National
Sports Day. It is a tribute to the hockey genius.
On this day, achievers in Indian sports are felicitated. Deserving and successful sportspersons are
conferred with the Arjuna Awards and Khel Ratna Awards at a special ceremony organised in Ashok
Hall, Rashtrapati Bhavan. They receive the award from the President of India. Sportspersons from
various fields are honoured at this award ceremony. Those who have contributed to Indian sports and
achieved fame for the country deserve to be honoured. We need to recognise and reward
sportspersons for having contributed to their respective fields. Many schools across the country
celebrate their Annual Sports Day on 29 August. This day helps all aspiring Indian sportspersons to
know about the various advancements in sports and what all our country has achieved in sports.
Celebrating National Sports Day provides a chance to encourage all kinds of sportspersons.
Apart from keeping you fit and healthy, sports have many other benefits also. A sport like table tennis
improves your concentration and reflexes. Sports improve stamina and strengthen the body. Children
who play sports develop sportsmanship spirit. They learn how to work together and cooperate in a
team. When it comes to sports, sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. Playing sports increases
a child’s ability to deal with failure. These kids are able to cope better with failure. Sports also help in
weight loss. Sports provide a chance for children to showcase their leadership skills. It helps them to
develop discipline. Being a part of the school sports team enables your child to make more friends
and become a known face in school. There are many sports competitions and events which are held
in school and outside school. Playing sports provides an opportunity for children to display their talent
and achieve success.
National Sports Day is an occasion to try and spread awareness about the importance of sports. By
conferring awards on this day, the government tries to encourage sports and reward the achievers.
Try to make sports a part of your child’s daily routine. Playing sports is a very good hobby and it will
keep your child occupied. Children nowadays go through a lot of stress in school because of exams,
homework, etc. Playing sports relaxes the mind and provides good relief from stress
