Basic Electronic

This document provides problems related to PN junction diodes and their applications. It includes questions about calculating forward and reverse bias voltages and currents of a silicon diode at different temperatures. It also contains problems about determining output waveforms, DC and AC resistances in diode circuits, including half-wave and full-wave rectifiers. Expressions are provided for key parameters like Idc, Vdc, and Irms for half-wave and full-wave rectifiers. Circuit diagrams include examples of rectifiers and clampers.

Problem Sheet-PN junction diodes and its applications
PN-Junction diode:
1. A silicon diode is operating at 25oC with a forward bias of 0.6V and current of 0.5A. Calculate
IO. If current is held constant at 0.5A, what voltage will exist across the diode at the following
temperatures (i) 75oC, (ii) –45oC ?
2. A silicon diode operates at a forward voltage of 0.4V. Calculate the factor by which the current
will be multiplied when temperature is increased from 25 to 150oC.
3. (a) A silicon diode has a reverse breakdown voltage VB of 100V. Its reverse current IR, is 1 A
at 22oC when reverse voltage applied across the diode is 95V.
(b) What is the diode’s reverse saturation current at 22oC?
(c)How much current will flow through the diode when it is forward biased with 0.5V at room
temperature?
(d) What will be the forward current at 0.5V forward bias when temperature raises 30oC?
4. Determine the dc resistances at the three different operating points shown in Fig. 1.

Fig. 1 Fig. 2
5. Determine the AC resistances at point A and B in Fig. 2.

6. (a) A Silicon diode has a saturation current of 1pA at 20oC. Find Diode bias voltage when diode
current is 3mA.
(b) Find diode bias current when the temperature is 100OC assuming the diode voltage to be
constant.
7. The forward current in a Si diode is 15 mA at 27oC. If reverse saturation current is 0.24nA,
what is the forward bias voltage?

Diode circuits and applications:

(iii) Vdc = Vm/ - Idc (Rf + Rs).
9. Obtain the expressions for Idc, Vdc, and Irms for a full wave rectifier.
