14 Commissioning Procedure

Before starting a centrifugal pump, checks must be performed to ensure proper installation and operation. These include visually inspecting connections and fittings, checking rotation, lubrication, and filling the pump before start up. Performance is then checked by monitoring pressure, flow, vibration, and current draw. Additional steps are required for multi-stage pumps, such as venting and tightening tie rods between casings if leaks occur.

COMMISSIONING PROCEDURE
Centrifugal pumps

Before pump start up check that all indications given in the Instruction Manual, in the general
arrangement drawing and in the other technical documentation have been duly observed.

A. CHECKS
1. Visual check of the pump unit. Check if all the external screws are securely tight (baseplate anchor bolts, pump/motor jacking
screws, coupling guard screws, etc). Baseplate must be correctly installed, without any distortion/tension due to the anchor bolts
tightening.
2. Check connections of pump nozzles to delivery pipe.
3. Check presence of pressure gauge on the delivery and suction side of pump. Pressure gauges are important to check pump
performance during running.
4. Check electrical connections of the motor and cable glands tightening
5. Check by hand free rotation of the shaft after coupling guard removing. Coupling guard must be replaced before pump starting.
6. Check coupling alignment. Coupling guard must be replaced before pump starting.
7. Check that all protections of rotating units be properly and securely installed.
8. In case of oil lubrication:
• Check oil level through sight-glass or constant level oil. In case fill with oil to have correct level. Refer to Instruction Manual for
the oil type.
9. In case of grease lubrication:
• Insert grease through nipples. If nipples are not present, bearings are life-lubricated type. Refer to Instruction Manual for
grease type.
10. If external flushing for mechanical seal/packing is required:
• Check if flushing line is properly installed
11. If heat exchanger for mechanical seal is installed:
• Check if cooling lines in/out are properly installed

B. START UP
12. Make sure plant and operators are ready for the start up
13. If external flushing is required: open flushing line valve and make sure flow is present.
14. If heat exchanger is installed: open cooling lines.
15. Open suction and delivery valve to fill pipe and pump.
16. Vent pump by mean the proper valve on delivery pipe (if installed) or loosing the pressure gauge connection screw. For vertical
pumps, vent also the top side of the casing whit the valve installed on cover
17. Close delivery valve.
18. Switch the motor briefly on and off and check if the rotation is correct with the direction arrow (CW-clockwise from fan view).
19. Start the pump up
20. Check the pressure gauge to see when the pressure becomes stable. If pressure does not increase, stop the pump and repeat the
start-up after some minutes.
21. Open delivery valve to regulate pump head.

C. ADJUSTING AND PERFORMANCE CHECKING

22. Check pump head with data-sheet. Head(m)=(Pm-Pa)x10.2/s; with Pm=delivery pressure in bar, Pa=suction pressure in bar,
s=specific gravity (water=1). Use delivery valve to adjust pump head.
23. Control if pump has vibrations or noise
24. Check if any leakages occur from nozzle, plugs, mechanical seal, components. For multistage pumps see point D.
25. Check current absorption of electric motor
26. Check bearings temperatures of the pump and of the motor

D. MULTISTAGE PUMPS ADDITIONAL INSTRUCTIONS

27. If intermediate foot is present (pumps with high number of stages), check correct planarity between support planes of the three
feet. Distortion of pump must be avoided.
28. Vent the pump casing by mean of venting plug or venting valves. If present on delivery pipe, use some connection to vent air
between pump and check valve. During venting operation, rotate pump shaft by hand to help air evacuation.
29. In case of leakages from ring casing, stop the pump and tight the tie-rods. Torque are indicated in the following table:

Size Torque (Nm) Size Torque (Nm)

25 (M20) 170 80 (M18) 160
32 (M16) 130 100 (M20) 170
40 (M16) 130 125 (M30) 200
50 (M16) 130 150 (M39) 250
65 (M18) 160 200 (M45) 300

30. In case of hot liquid pumping (above 80°C):

• Before start-up, wait until whole pump reaches steady hot condition.
• Start the pump
• Check pump performance
• Stop the pump and wait until it is cool.
• Tighten tie-rods (in cross sequence) as per torque values indicated in previous table. This operation is necessary to
compensate elongation of tie-rods due thermal dilation of casings.
• If necessary repeat again tightening operation.
