International Regulation News Update: Maritime Safety Committee's 91 Session

The MSC adopted several revisions to SOLAS at its 91st session from 26-30 November 2012: 1) A new code on noise level limits for ships was adopted, specifying maximum noise levels for crew spaces. 2) Revisions to firefighting arrangements require at least two radios per fire party on ships built after July 2014 and old ships by 2018. Self-contained breathing apparatus must have 1200-liter capacity or 30 minutes use by July 2019. 3) Amendments to the FSS Code address fixed firefighting systems and apply to ships built after July 2014. 4) Revisions on stability assessments and muster drills were also approved.
