Peer Mentorship program

BITS Pilani, Pilani Campus
About US
Peer Mentorship Program (PMP) is a body under the Chief Warden's Office that aims
to tackle the issues faced by students in diverse spheres that affect their academic,
social and general well-being. Through this Program, we intend to generate an efficient
and effective network of students on campus.

In addition to providing access to a national network, the program provides an

opportunity for students to impart their experience to their juniors according to their
own schedule.

Our Vision: To develop sustainable improvement in student capabilities through

efficient utilisation of social networks.

The Peer Mentorship Program (PMP) works towards achieving this vision through
the primary objectives of:

1) Enabling constructive interaction, guidance and mentorship to build a

close-knit student community at BITS Pilani.
2) Providing a reliable and comprehensive information & support system for
the student community to eradicate false information, myths, etc
surrounding the BITSian student community.
3) Improving the mental health of the campus by working with partner bodies
to reduce cases of substance abuse and indiscipline (academic or
otherwise) in BITS Pilani.

For Dual Degree Programs,

Discipline Core and Elective requirements of both the degrees have to be met. General Institutional
Requirements are the same and need not be repeated. Courses of either of the two degrees can be used
to fulfil the open elective requirements of the degree.

A PS-II or Thesis must be done to meet the requirements of each degree. Therefore, to complete the
dual degree program, a student must complete one of the following:
 2 Practice School-II courses
 2 Thesis courses
 1 Practice School-II course and 1 Thesis course.

BITS Pilani | Fresher’s Guide

2

1.2. Evaluation
The performance of a student in each course is assessed by the teacher by means of continuous
evaluation throughout the semester in classwork, periodical quizzes (sometimes unannounced), tests
(both open and closed book), tutorials, laboratory work, homework, seminars, group discussions,
project, etc., and a comprehensive examination at the end of the semester. The student is thereby given
a large number of opportunities to carry out various academic assignments and be evaluated. Besides
encouraging and rewarding continuous and systematic study, the system provides a constant feedback
to the student as to where he/she stands, thus enabling him/her to cultivate regular habits of studying
and preparing himself/herself for the future. The system discards the conventional emphasis on a single
final examination and numerical marks as the only absolute indication of the quality of student's
performance.

1.3. Grading

At the end of the semester, the incharge of the course awards letter grade.

Grade Quality of Performance Grade Point

A Excellent 10
A- Very Good 9
B Good 8
B- Above Average 7
C Average 6
C- Below Average 5
D Poor 4
E Exposed 2

Performance below an E grade will be declared as an NC (Not Cleared) where the student will have to
repeat the corresponding course.

There are also courses in which the teacher awards non-letter grades which have only a qualitative
hierarchy. The teacher may also pronounce the performance of a student in a course in terms of certain
reports which should not be misconstrued as grades.

1.4. Course Books

The list of textbook/reference books can be found in the Timetable or in the handouts of the opted
courses. The following are the methods to purchase books:

i. Culture of Book Pop/Book Mom

It is a BITSian tradition to buy their first-year books from an immediate senior. While a few look
at this as a cheaper way to buy books, its roots lie in establishing better relations between a
junior and a senior. The senior is usually of the same discipline as the first year so that the
tradition can be carried forward throughout the BITSian life.

BITS Pilani | Fresher’s Guide

3

ii. Akshay Co-Operative Store

Offers a 15% discount on new books when purchased by cash. Notebooks and other stationery
are also available here.
iii. Bookstore in C’not Market
iv. Roongta House & Ashu Book Stall Seller of Old Books.

1.5. Academic Requirements

During the student’s stay in the Institute, the Institute expects him/her to show a certain minimum
performance and progress. The minimum academic requirements regarding the performance and
progress for the Integrated First Degrees are:

i. A CGPA of at least 4.5 at the end of every semester for integrated first degree.
ii. Not more than one E grade in a semester for integrated first degree programmes.
iii. The pace of progress of a student should be such that at any stage of reckoning he/she should
not have spent more than 50% extra time than what is prescribed for him/her upto that stage
in his/her programme.

Students who fail to meet the minimum academic requirements stipulated above are put under an
appropriate committee which monitors their programmes and give guidance so that they are properly
rehabilitated at the earliest. For the integrated first degree students, this is done by Academic
Counselling Board (ACB). These committees are appointed by the Senate and are given authority to take
appropriate action including discontinuance of the student or transfer to another programme.

1.6. Unfair Means Cases

The guideline for the punishment to unfair means cases is as follows:

Code Offence Punishment

1.0 Possession of any communication device Warning
such as a mobile phone in the examination
hall; possession of any written material
generally not allowed during examinations.
2.0 Possession of material, in any form, relevant Registration cancelled for the said course

examination or during the distribution of of severity of the offence.
answer scripts
5.0 Impersonation (deputing a person on one’s Registration cancelled for the said course and
behalf to write the examination or appearing discontinued from the programme
for a person to write the examination)

All the students are advised to maintain a high ethical standard and should not attempt to use unfair
means in academic matters and during examinations.

1.7. Minors

“Minor programs” are offered as options for first-degree students with the intent of encouraging them
to add focus to their supplemental learning (outside a major area) as well as recognizing and
certifying the knowledge obtained in an area that is outside of their major area.
At present, eight minor programs viz. Minor in Data Science, English Studies, Film and Media, Finance,
Materials Science and Engineering, Philosophy, Economics and Politics (PEP), Physics and Public
Policy are available.
Guidelines:
 A student – if he/she chooses to pursue a minor – must declare at the end of the 2nd year that
he/she will pursue a specific minor.
 Each minor may come with an exclusion clause (i.e. students in some disciplines are not allowed to
access this minor).
 The Department(s) offering a minor may impose additional restrictions on the input (e.g. a minimum
CGPA and/or minimum grades in certain courses before admission to the minor).
 A minor option would allow a student to pursue the study of an area or a sub-area through a set of
courses but not as exhaustively as required to obtain a degree (i.e. a major) in that area. A minor
will be recognized by means of a separate certificate, to be issued only on the completion of the
major degree.
 A minor would allow a Department (or multiple Departments) to offer a package of courses in an
area/sub-area to students for whom this area/sub-area would not be part of their (major) program.

Requirements:
 A student will be required to complete at least 5 courses (15 units minimum) for a minor but a
specific minor may require more courses / units.
 Courses for a minor will include (i) core (i.e. mandatory) courses and (ii) elective courses (i.e. to be
chosen from a pool).
 A student must obtain a minimum CGPA of 4.5 in the courses applicable for the minor.

For finer details and list of courses, please refer Bulletin (page 207).

1.8. Practice School Programme

Practice School is an educational innovation by BITS seeking to link industry experience with university
instruction. It is an internship undertaken by the students at some best industries in
the country.PS provides students with an opportunity to work on relevant assignments, under the
guidance of professional experts and under the supervision of faculty. Consequently, Practice School
serves as a platform that facilitates and promotes partnership and intellectual exchange between
academia and industry

Practice School-I (PS-I) is of eight weeks duration. It is offered during the summer after the students
have completed two years of course work. PS-I is primarily an exposure-oriented program which is
graded for five units as it is an integral part of the curriculum.

Practice School-II, of five and a half months duration, carrying twenty units credit, is operated round the
year, July to December and January to June. This is done principally to make available a continuous
stream of well-prepared students to work on developmental projects in the industry.
