The lesson plan is for a 7th grade science class on interactions in the atmosphere. It aims to demonstrate how different phenomena occur in the atmosphere and analyze the advantages of the Philippines' location in relation to climate, weather, and seasons. Students will account for land and sea breezes, monsoons, and the Intertropical Convergence Zone. The lesson involves students performing an activity to illustrate warm and cold air movement, then relating this to local winds and their effects on fishermen.

TEACHER’S HANDOUT
Concept:

Warm and Cold Air

During the day, the surface of the Earth become warm because of the sun. Some parts of the Earth will warm up
quickly than others. Naturally, the air above the warmer surface will also become warm. Air moves toward the place
where warm air is rising.

Whenever we feel the air moving, that means that somewhere, warm air is rising. And the air around us moves
toward the place where warm air is rising. Every time you feel the wind, it means the air is moving towards the place
where warm air is rising and moving horizontally.

We can use the illustration to show the movement of the air since in the previous activity it shows that the surface of
the earth heats up faster and cools down faster than water. In different time of the day we experience two types of
breeze because of the movement of warm and cold air in ours surrounding.

A. Reviewing previous lesson or presenting the new lesson

1. Compare the two pictures? What have you observed?

Possible Answer: Because of too much rain it causes flood and damages to our surrounding.

B. Establishing a purpose for the lesson

Q1 Answer: The balloon has hot air which makes it rise. This is because hot air is lighter than cool air

Q2 Answer: To help keep the balloon in the air rising, hot air needs to be propelled upwards into the envelope using
the burner, in case you want to decent the balloon you need to decrease the hot air that you release.

C. Presenting examples/instances of the new lesson

Answer: True; because the hot air is less dense it rises the cold air replace the warm air that rise

D. Answer Key for Students Activity

1. The smoke goes up.
2. No, the smoke comes out on the top opening of the paper cup.
3. When the air is still cold it stays inside the cup, but when it gets warmer it rises and goes out through
the top opening of the cup.

E. Discussing new concepts and practicing new skills #2

At night, the warm air rises on land while the sea will stay warm, the air above the sea will be warmer than the
land, the warm air above the sea will then rise. Air from land will move out to replace the rising warm air.

F. Developing mastery (leads to Formative Assessment 3)

Answer vary based on student’s presentation.

G. Finding practical applications of concepts and skills in daily living

The maneuver of the fishing boat will be affected, by the direction of the wind.

H. Making generalizations and abstractions about the lesson

The movement of the air is affected due to the changes in air temperature in ours surrounding.

I. Additional activities for application or remediation

Because during summer the temperature of our surrounding is different (land & sea). Land surface heat up faster
during day time the air above the sea is still cold the wind coming from the sea is stronger unlike if it is rainy
seasons the surrounding has almost equal amount of temperature.

ACTIVITY TITLE
Where does it go?

I. OBJECTIVE/S:

1. Describe the movement of warm air.

2. Compare the movement of hot air and cold air.

II. MATERIALS:
Mosquito coil (katol) match
Small candle
Medium sized paper cup

III. PROCEDURES:
1. Cut the bottom part of the paper cup. Thus the bottom and top part are open. Bore 2 small square openings
on each sides.
2. Place the candle inside the cup. Lit the candle and place the mosquito coil at the other side.
3. As smoke is formed from the candle and mosquito coil, observe what happens to the direction of the smoke.
Illustration:

IV. ANALYSIS:
1. What is the direction of the smoke?
2. Does the smoke comes out through the holes on each side? Why?
3. Describe the movement of the warm air inside the cup.
4. Where is the cold air? Where does it go?
