MATH 1150 - Assign #5

This document contains an assignment for a calculus course. It includes 8 problems involving derivatives: finding the derivative of various functions using definitions; applying derivatives to limits; proving functions are/aren't differentiable; using definitions and rules like the chain rule to take derivatives. The assignment is due on February 24, 2010 and must include identifying information like the course code and name.

MATH 1150 (M12B) – Functions of Real Variables

GROUP 1 - Dr. K. Rahaman

Assignment #5
Derivatives

• To be submitted by 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday 24th February 2010 in the Department of

Mathematics & Computer Science.
• On your script, please include in the following order, the course code with its Group #, i.e. MATH
1150 – Group 1, assignment #, your name, your ID #.
• Please ensure that you submit your script in the correct MATH 1150 box for Group 1.

1. Using the definition of the derivative, find the derivative of,

cos (ax ) , where ’a’ is a constant.

2. If g is continuous at ‘a’ and f (x ) = (x − a ) g(x ) , use the definition of a derivative to find f '(a ) .

x f (x 1 ) − x 1 f (x )
3 (a) If f ' (x1 ) exists, prove that, lim = f (x 1 ) − x 1f ' (x 1 ) .
x → x1 x − x1

f (a + ∆x ) − f (a − ∆x )
(b) If f '(a ) exists, prove that, f ' (a ) = lim .
∆x → 0 2 ∆x

4 Let f and g be two functions defined as follows:

x 2 + 1, x ≤ 1 x 2 (1 + x )
f (x ) =  , g (x ) = , −1 ≤ x < 1
2 x , x > 1 1− x

Using the definition of the derivative, prove that f is differentiable at x = 1 , but

g is not differentiable at x = 0 .

ax + b, x < 2
5. Find the values of ‘a’ and ‘b’ such that f '(2 ) exists, where, f (x ) =  2
2 x − 1, x ≥ 2

6. Differentiate the following:

2  4
(ii)  4 x 2 + 7 
5
(i) ( 10 − 5x ) 

2 x 3 + 1
   
2
 2x − 1 
(iii)   ( ( ))
(iv) sin 3 cos x 2
 3x 2 + x − 2 

7. Let h (x ) = f (g(x )) − g(f (x )) , where f and g are differentiable functions.

Suppose that f (c ) = g(c ) = c , where ‘c’ is a constant, prove that h ' (c ) = 0 .

8. Use the chain rule to prove that,

(i) the derivative of an even function is an odd function,
(ii) the derivative of an odd function is an even function,
provided that the derivative of each exists.
