CXC English Argumentative Essay
The great Martin Luther King Jr. stated that, "Education is a right, not a privilege." However,
expulsion completely disregards this statement. It deprives a child of vital class time, hence
depriving a child of their right. Education is necessary for success, as shown is a recent study
done by Harvard University which states that," Something a simple a High School diploma
increases your ability to attain a job tenfold." So why must we strip a child of their success?
Secondly, expulsion wastes a child's time. For example, children have been expelled for simple
offences such as: using their cellphones, violating dress codes or even respectfully disagreeing
with teachers. Expulsion should only be necessary for few cases. Furthermore, a child is then
sent home and may actually become reformed, and understand the implications of their actions.
But now what? They are unable to regain entry to their former school, and the fact that they were
expelled, divests their potential to attend another school. They cannot obtain an education, they
become unproductive and burden their guardians. Do you want to raise a liability?
Finally, with their newly attained free time, children provide idle hands for the Devil's work.
As stated by Charles Stone, a leading Behavioral Scientist at Princeton University, stated that,
"On average, 20% of children are exposed to gangs, and this percentage triples when they are out
of school and idle." These statistics are staggering as well as unfortunate. With increased truancy
from school, and exposure to gangs, skyrocketing crime is inevitable. Additionally, increased
crime leads to decreased employment and a deteriorating society. Would you like to live in a
future of rampant crime and warlords?
In conclusion, as disseminated in the points above, expulsion is outdated, and is a tactic which
should no longer be employed as it only brings forth more agony. Tradition should not incite
malpractice, so let us vaccinate this sickness to our already disease stricken education system.
