G5 Score: Cacapit, Ma. Claire Elizabeth A. Grade 11-St. Justine de Jacobis Film Analysis
First and foremost, in the visual component of the film, the lighting used in the movie is
not that great; for, it's just a natural lighting. And because of that, the lighting is weak and is not
fixed. As a result, there are some scenes in the movie that are not viewed clearly-- that is why,
some of us find it hard to understand the film; however, even though the lighting is not that great
and not that bad at all, the shot distances used in the movie are quite fine and good, because I
noticed the movement from longer to closer shot distances. Examples of the shot distances used
are: the wide shot, very wide shot, master shot, and many more. These shot distances were shown
on the opening scenes, fight scenes, happy moments, during conversations, and etc. Actually, in
my own perspective, I think shot distances are used to emphasize the characters' actions or
movements, as well as the environment-- producing a harmony between them. Aside from those
two concepts, the space used in the film is maximized; for, the characters can move freely and
they are not only limited to one area. They can move and do anything, in order to portray their
roles and different scenes.
Second, the film's dramatic component is amazing. Because in my own point of view, I
think the film started in the way that it does; for, it wants us to wonder and give an utmost feeling
of interest to us--viewers, to continue watching-- and see what happens next. Unfortunately, the
flow is not that organized and consistent, because there are some scenes in the movie that are a
little bit slow and some scenes are not really quite needed. And I think those scenes did not really
drag the movie down, but it only consumed the time needed for more significant scenes-- to
convey the movie's message. But over-all, it is a great movie because the portrayed characters,
really caught my attention. For, the characters portrayed the not-so-usual roles that we commonly
see in some movies. And when I saw how the characters were artistically and dramatically
presented, I was really astonished-- because we, students, never expected that these unfamiliar
happenings in school will be visualized and portrayed. Also, because of the acting of the
characters and their complex personalities, I felt the realistic picturesque, as it come to life.
Moreover, for the enhancement of the film, the character of Henry helped a lot-- because he is a
very inspiring and an influential-- model of change. In fact, he, himself, also doesn't even know
what life in the future waits for him-- and for all of them. But, he came to realized that, all we
need to do is to try. Try and see what you can do to become an instrument of change; and if that
didn't work, still believe. Just like what Henry emphasized in the end part of the movie wherein--
sometimes, all we need to do is to hope for change, hope for the best, and hope-- for hope. We
live in a life of uncertainty, but with hope, I believe that everything's going to be fine-- just trust in
Him. As the essential message of the movie is clearly determined and understood, I know for sure
that it can help awaken the sleeping society.
Third, the movie's literary component is breathtaking. For, the story is told using
flashbacks and systematically-arranged episodes. Because of that, the movie's message which is all
about understanding one's self, purpose, dreams, and change is definitely apprehended; that is
why, it is believable, interesting, and thought-provoking-- especially when the climax of the story
is revealed, in such a way that, things are becoming hard for the students and is testing their inner
self and bravery. And because the setting is in a school, it affects the story by means of, moving
the hearts of the audience and opening their minds; for, they do not know that these uncommon
things in school-- really happens. So, I really won’t deny that the literary component of the movie
is unique and mind-blowing. For, it didn’t only unlock our minds to new windows of perspective,
but also enabled us to understand these kinds of issues circulating in the society now. Moreover,
different symbolisms were also used for a better understanding of the movie. Just like the fish that
Bunda carved on soap when her parents are fighting during the time of her graduation. It
symbolizes her desire to escape from that ocean tank of prison. Also, another symbolism is the
pen and paper that Jenny used, to write love letters to Stephanie. Those letters are the symbolism
of her love to Stephanie while the pen, is a symbol of courage to confess-- what she feels.
Through those symbolisms, the film’s literary component is enhanced, understood, and so much
appreciated because of its creative delivery-- that truly expressed the emotions, stand, and feelings
felt by these kinds of persons living in the real world.
Fourth, the idea or theme of the movie is definitely unraveled by all of us. Also, we are all
enlightened about what it is really like to be a true human being. For, the movie highlighted the
significance of God's word when Stephanie's father reprimanded her that, what she's doing is
wrong and it will never be right-- because in the eyes of the Lord, it will always remain
unpleasant. Furthermore, the movie also emphasized that, we, humans are all sinners and we're
not perfect-- because we also commit mistakes; however, it doesn't mean that we'll be committing
the same mistakes over and over again. Remember, “Once is enough, twice is too much.” But, it
also doesn't mean that we can't be happy anymore because of those mistakes we committed. For,
the film also pointed out that-- “True happiness can be attained not by being perfect, but by means
of being true and to only do what is right all the time.” Because of that, the central goal of the
movie which is to find one's hopeful purpose for change is attained-- for that goal isn't only made
to remain as a goal. Instead, that goal is meant to educate and bring awareness to certain issues
like identity crisis, depression, anxiety, mental health, and many more. And due to those alarming
issues in our society, the movie left a strong impression on me. It made me known and realized,
that even the smallest things can hurt a person more and another thing is that-- we're more than
just of what people thinks and says about us-- we're more than just a shallow water. Just like Sofia
who is a symbolism of change. Before, she isn't quite visible to everyone. But when she embraced
change and only became true to herself, she realized that somehow, she can be happier and be
something-- when she thought, she's merely nothing. On top of that, the message of the movie is,
we live in a life of uncertainty. Well, that idea is really true. For, we never know when our time
will come, or what will happen next; however, even though life is uncertain, we should still keep
that flame of hope in us-- lit. Because with that thing alone, I know and believe that the change
we dream of will happen, as long as we continue to hope for the best-- hope for change.
Lastly, honestly I'm not too satisfied on the ending of the movie because some of the
characters didn't have the chance to talk about things, sort things out, and to clear up some stuffs.
So, if I have the chance to change the ending of the movie, I'll do it; and the ending that I will be
creating is a happy ending-- where everyone in the batch is successful, happy, and united. In
addition, if there are still unfinished businesses, arguments or misunderstandings, I would like to
create a scene wherein everyone is gathered-- trying to fix the situation. I want an ending that
would leave a big impact to the viewers. Although the message of the movie is understood, the
characters still have a not-so-huge gap between them. And if that thing is present, it gives a tight
feeling to us-- viewers. For, the movie primarily talks about hope and change, but when the
characters met each other again after so many years, I can't feel the sense of hope circulating
between all of them, that someday-- they will be united as one. For, most of them are still in bad
terms, so I kind of feel a little bit sad and disappointed about it-- because in the end part, Carlo
and Mitch felt the regret for their batch, because they are not able to talk about those things and
fix things up. I want an ending like these, for they all deserve to be happy and we, as the audience,
want to be at least satisfied on the film's ending even though the movie's message is already
stimulating. Most of all, the main goal of the movie is achieved, and its message is highly
apprehended by all of us—a message that will surely inspire and influence all of us to be an
archetype of change, as we all hope for the best.
