A. Introduction
1. Definition
Context clues are bits of information within a text that will assist you in deciphering the
meaning of unknown words. Since most of your knowledge of vocabulary comes from
reading, it is important that you recognize context clues. By becoming more aware of
particular words and phrases surrounding a difficult word, you can make logical guesses
about its meaning.
2. Purpose
To help readers understand new or unfamiliar word. These clues can also be used to
complete sentences and to select the correct word or phrase to complete a sentence
3. Various
The type of context clue are :
a. Synonym context clue
Uses words and phrases that have similar meanings to help the reader understand
the meaning of the unfamiliar word.
e.g : The minuscule, tiny puppy had a difficult time walking up the large stairs.
Minuscule and tiny have similar meanings, so they are synonyms. If you know what
tiny means, you can infer what minuscule means.
b. Antonym context clue
Uses the meaning of other words to help readers understand the meaning of the
unfamiliar word. The antonym clue, however, uses opposite meanings instead of
similar meanings.
e.g : Marty wanted to be inconspicuous at the party, but I wanted to stand out so
everyone would see my creative costume.
The reader can conclude that inconspicuous must mean not wanting to be seen because
the other person wants to stand out.
c. Definition context clues
Give the reader the actual meaning of the word in the sentence.
e.g : The man's obesity, or too much fat, caused much worry for the doctor.
This sentence actually tells the reader that obesity means.
B. Identification
How to identifying the unfamiliar word in the sentences by using context clues :
Step 1: Reread and read ahead
Stop and reread the words that come before and after the unfamiliar word.
Step 2: Identify context clues
Think about the meaning of the words in the text that surround the unfamiliar word.
Step 3: Decide on a meaning
Use what you know from the context to make an educated guess about the meaning of the
unfamiliar word.
Step 4: Check that meaning in the context
The meaning you decided on should make sense in the sentence and in relation to the main
idea of the text.
C. Application
Solution
From the paragraph above, we know that there is a word that have an unfamiliar meaning
A solution is a homogeneous mixture of two or more substances. A solution may exist in any
phase. A solution consists of a solute and a solvent. The solute is the substance that is dissolved
in the solvent. The amount of solute that can be dissolved in solvent is called its solubility. For
example, in a saline solution, salt is the solute dissolved in water as the solvent. For solutions
with components in the same phase, the substances present in lower concentration are solutes,
while the substance present in highest abundance is the solvent. Using air as an example, oxygen
and carbon dioxide gases are solutes, while nitrogen gas is the solvent.
