Assignment -I
(Harmonic motion, undamped free vibration of SDOF system)

(1) A particular motor rotates at 3000 revolutions per minute (rpm). What is its speed in rad/sec, and
how many seconds it take to make one revolution?
(2) The displacement of a certain object is described by y(t)=23 sin 5t, where t is measures in
seconds. Compute its period and its oscillation frequency in rad/sec and in Hz.
(3) The displacement of a certain object in meters is described by y(t)=0.5sin(7t+4), where t is
measured in seconds. Obtain the expressions for its velocity and acceleration as function of time.
What is the amplitude of the velocity and of the acceleration?
(4) A harmonic motion has amplitude of 0.2 cm and a period of 0.15 s. Determine the maximum
velocity and acceleration.
(5) An accelerometer mounted on a machine foundation indicates that the foundation is vibrating
harmonically at 5 cps with a maximum acceleration of 3 g. Determine the displacement amplitude
of vibration.
(6) A vibration expert notices that a framed foundation vibrates with a frequency of 10 Hz with
maximum velocity of 4.57 m/s. Determine its displacement amplitude, its period and its maximum
acceleration.
(7) Express the complex vector z = 3+4i in the form of A eiθ
(8) Find the resultant of two vibrations:
x1= 10 sin (ωt+45) and x2= 20 sin (ωt-30)

(9) If

what are a1 and a2.

(10) Give the amplitude, frequency, and period of vibration for the signal illustrated in Fig 1.

(11) Determine the phase difference between the two signals illustrated in Fig.2. By how much is y lagging
x?

(12) Determine the displacement (x), velocity (dx/dt), and acceleration (d2x/dt2) of a spring-mass system
with f= 2.0 Hz for the initial conditions x(0) = 0.025 m, and dx/dt(0)=0.05 m/s. Plot x (t),dx/dt (t), and
d2x/dt2 (t) from t= 0 to 5 s.
(13) A vibrating system consists of a mass of 20 kg and a spring of stiffness 70 N/cm. If the mass is given
an initial upward velocity of 8 cm/s from a point 4 cm down from the equilibrium position, determine the
maximum amplitude and acceleration of the system.
(14) The displacement of a certain object in meters is described by y(t)=A sin(5t+φ), where t is measured in
seconds. It is known that the object’s displacement at t=0 is 0.048 m and that its velocity at t=0 is 0.062
m/s. Compute the value of A and φ
(15) An engine of mass 500 kg is mounted on an elastic foundation of equivalent stiffness 700 kN/m.
Determine the natural frequency of the system in Hz.
(16) The platform illustrated in Fig.3 has a natural frequency of 50 Hz. It is supported by four identical
springs. If the platform mass is equal to 300 kg determine the spring constant of a single spring. Assume
that the platform's displacements are purely vertical.
