Marshall Virtual Lab – Introduction


The Marshal Virtual Lab allows Marshall faculty, students, and staff to access a virtual desktop from any device. The
virtual desktops contain the standard suite of Microsoft Office software and any specialized software required by course
curriculum at Marshall. To use the Marshall Virtual Lab you will need to install something called the ‘VMware Horizon
Client’ on your Windows or Apple device. It is through this client that you will access the lab and desktops contained
within it.

Installing the VMware Horizon Client – for Windows


This only needs to be done only once on a given computer. To download and install the client:
1. Start your web browser and go to: https://www.vmware.com/go/viewclients
2. On the download page, select the operating system for the computer then click “Go to Downloads”. *

3. Click on the “Download” button.

The file should be saved in your “Downloads” directory and name should start with: VMware-Horizon-View-Client

* To determine whether your version of Windows is 32 or 64 bit go to “Start” and type “System” in the Search box.
Click “System” in the search results. System Type lists the bit version.

4. Launch the setup file and the VMware Horizon Client installer will begin.

5. Select the “Typical” installation then


click the “I Agree & Install” button.

6. When the installation is complete click the


“Finish” button.

7. Once the installation completes you will be asked to reboot your


computer. Please close any other open applications you have
and the click on “Yes.”

8. Click “Start” then “VMware Horizon Client”.


9. Double click “Add Server”.

10. At “Enter the name of the Connection Server”, type:


lab.marshall.usc.edu and click “Connect.”

11. Type your Marshall username and password then click “Login”.

12. To be able to access


your local drives and
removable storage
devices while working
in the Virtual Desktop
click “Allow”.

That’s it! Installation is complete.

Installing the VMware Horizon Client – for MAC


The first time you use the Marshall Virtual Lab you must download and install the client. This only needs to be done
once on a computer.

1. Start your web browser and go to: https://www.vmware.com/go/viewclients


2. On the download page, select the operating system for the computer and click on “Go to Downloads”.

Note: if you are using an iOS or Android device download the client from the Apple store or Google Play store.

3. Click on the “Download” button.

The file should be saved in your “Downloads” folder and name should start with: VMware-Horizon-View-Client
4. Launch the setup file and the VMware Horizon Client installer will begin.

5. To accept the terms in the License Agreement
window, click the “Agree” button.

6. Drag the VMware Horizon Client icon to the


Applications folder.

7. Once the application finished copying,


launch the VMware Horizon Client.

8. You will be asked if you are sure you would like to open
the application downloaded from the Internet. Click
“Open” to continue.

9. At “Start remote USB and Printing services” click


“Continue”. You will also be required to type in the
username and password for your Mac.

10. When prompted to enter the name of the Connection


Server, type in lab.marshall.usc.edu and click on
“Connect”.

11. When prompted, type you Marshall username and password


then click “Login”.

12. To be able to access your local drives and
removable storage devices while working
in the Virtual Desktop click “Allow”.

The Marshall Virtual Lab will be added to your VMware Horizon


Client and depending upon your setting, you may be automatically
connected to the virtual desktop.

To access the Marshall Virtual Lab desktop double


click on the “vLab Desktop” icon.

When you are done using the Virtual Desktop, you can quit it by
moving your mouse to the dock at the bottom of the screen and
right clicking the vLab icon.

Installing the VMware Horizon Client – for iOS or Android Devices


If using an iOS or Android device please download the client from the Apple store or Google Play store.

Using the VMware Horizon Client


To use the Marshall Virtual Lab run the VMware Horizon Client application using the shortcut located on your desktop or
in your Start menu.

1. Click / Double click the VMware Horizon Client shortcut.


2. Double click on the “lab.marshall.usc.edu” server that you
configured in the steps above.

3. Enter your Marshall user name and password and


click on the “Login” button.

At this point the virtual desktop should launch.

Move mouse to the bottom of the screen to
make the dock appear. Click the “Virtual
Desktop” icon and select “Quit”.

Saving Your Files Safely
Very Important Note: Any files saved to the virtual desktop will be lost and are not recoverable.

You have a few options when it comes to saving your files while working with the virtual desktop.
o Your local computer
o Z:\ Temp Drive
o Web based file storage (such as OneDrive or Dropbox)

The files on your local computer are available through the “Computer” or “Explorer” application and are shown as
“Other” with your username and computer name listed.
