Parts of Speech describe the main roles that words play in sentences. There are eight main parts of speech: nouns name people, places, things, or ideas; pronouns take the place of nouns; verbs express actions or states of being; adjectives describe nouns; adverbs describe verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs; prepositions establish relationships between nouns and the rest of the sentence; conjunctions connect words, phrases, and clauses; and interjections express emotions.
