Dear Parents,

These are part of the list of the 260 most common words in children's reading, from
Dolch and Edwards & Summers research. Children should master reading them on
sight, that is, read and recognize them and know their meaning. The teachers will be
working on these in class. Words are grouped for common sounds.

Home Support

1. Please ask your child to read each word aloud to you. Put a dot beside each word you do.
The words he/she reads correctly the first time without help, should be ticked. You can put
another tick when you revise later and the child knows it perfectly.

2. Work on TEN of the words each night. You could also make flash cards, or label items around
your home with these words.
a) Read one to your child.
b) Then read it together.
c) He/she then reads it alone. Continue with each of the other words.
3. Repeat this every night until your child can read every word and knows the meaning.

4. You can group words in other ways to help learning.
