Obesity in children and adolescents is gradually becoming a major public health problem in
many developing countries including, India. [15],[16] (Popkin BM and Doak CM.,1998),( Gupta
DK., et al.,2011)The problem of obesity in India is not only found in the metropolitan cities [16](
Gupta DK., et al.,2011) but even in the smaller cities like Surat, [17]( Goyal JP., et al.,2011)
Mysore, [18]( Saraswathi YS., et al.,2011) Thrissur [19] (Panjikkaran ST., et al., 2009) and
others. [20] (Raj M., and Kumar RK., 2010) A substantial impact on public health could be
achieved if other factors causing obesity besides the conventional ones of diet and physical
activity could be identified and acted upon [21] (Gupta NK., et al.,2002) and that makes this area
vital for research.
The skipping of meals is a common practice in this age group, and this is more common in girls
than in boys. Girls generally miss meals in an effort to lose/maintain weight. Generally,
breakfast, which is the most important meal of the day, is not consumed. The reason could also
be waking up late, and consequently getting late for school/college. As School and Colleges
begin very early in the morning, many children’s to not feel like eating at that hour. The ill-
effects of skipping breakfast are short attention span and lake of alertness in the classroom,
which then negatively impacts the learning process.[1] Ravinder Chadha and Pulkit Mathur. (2015)
The Adolescent Health Behaviors Survey in Korea has reported that the rate of skipping
breakfast more than twice a week among adolescents aged 13–18 years was 26.7% [18]. Thus,
skipping breakfast may be a risk factor for weight gain because among those who skip breakfast,
increased snacking, skipping lunch, living a sedentary lifestyle and obesity are more common
than among those who do eat breakfast [19].( Keski-Rahkonen A., et al.,2003)
Eating breakfast is thought to be essential for balanced nutrient intake and healthful nutritional
status, both of which can influence weight status and cognitive ability related to memory and
academic performance 20, 21, 22.( Pollitt E., et al., 1998., Kleinman R., et al., 1998., Alaimo K.,
et al.,2001)
Academic achievement of students in Korea is an issue of great interest for both students and
parents, in part because academic achievement is directly related to university entrance and
future employment opportunities. Recently, the relationship of being overweight and health-
related behaviors to academic achievement has drawn much attention. Previous studies 1, 2, 3, 4,
5, 6(Alaimo K., et al., 1998., . Nord M., et al,.2002., . Lee M.Y ., et al.,2002., Siega-Riz A.M., et
al.,1998., Keski-Rahkonen A., et al.,2003 and Sjoberg A., et al.,2003) have reported that health-
related behaviors of adolescents—including diet, physical activity, smoking, and drinking
alcohol—are related to academic achievement of school-age children and adolescents.
Level of academic achievement was quantified by the KNSAE scores. In this study, we used the
test scores on three obligatory subjects (language, mathematics, and foreign Language parts), and
the average test score for these subjects because all students took these subjects. The level of
academic achievement was classified into high, medium, and low groups. (Yang Wha Kang., et
al., and Jong-Hyock Park., et al.,2016)
