Marbled Paper
OBJECTIVES:
INTRODUCTION
The expirement we performed last week taught us the concept of how chemical bonding
works. It consists of making marbled paper using only colored powdered chalk to be added to a
solution mixed of water and vinegar. According to Alexander I. Boldyrev, a chemistry professor at
Utah State University, Chemical bonding “is the heart of chemistry”. Chemical bonding is one of
the most basic fundamentals of chemistry that explains other concepts such as molecules and
reactions. It also points out to the attraction between atoms and can come in several different
types with varying strength. Without it, scientists wouldn't be able to explain why atoms are
attracted to each other or how products are formed after a chemical reaction has taken place.
Understanding the making and breaking of bonds is at the heart of chemistry.
We were incharged of bringing colored chalk and sheets of bond paper. The other
materials vital to the experiment were provided by the teacher. We followed the procedure
correctly and got an ideal result. The only problem we encountered is not putting the whole half
sheet of bond paper to the mixture to make a handle but I was told by the teacher that the whole
sheet needs to be covered.
The half sheet of paper looked exactly like a marble thus the name if the experiment. It
showed properties of chemical bonding during the process of making the mixture. The marbled
look was got from the water and vinegar solution and the color from the dissolving powdered
chalk. It formed a large colored circular pools on the surface of the water and vinegar solution.
Guide questions:
1. The pieces of chalk was very brittle and was easily turned to powder. I think that the
chemical bonding of calcium carbonate was strong enough to retain physical form but not
enough to withstand the pounding of the hammer.
2. The reaction of vinegar and chalk is formation of carbon dioxide gas. That can be
physically seen through the bubbles moving up which are the carbon dioxide forming.
3. Chemical bonds are formed during the reactions. The dissolving of powdered chalk
suggests chemical bond. So as the mixture of water and vinegar.
Summary
The purpose of the experiment is to identify what chemical bonding is. Almost everything we
percept with our senses, our daily life, and the air we breath in is the result of many chemical
bondings. The experiment helped us in understanding the more complexity of chemical bonding.

Application
The field of study I’m interested in is engineering. In a sense, chemical bonding is very
vital in engineering. Mostly because engineers are someone who invent, design, analyze, build
and many more. They need to know about which are primary bonds and secondary bonds. A
concrete example is when a civil engineer is constructing a house. Nevertheless, a house needs
to be sturdy and safe which in this case he will be using materials that has strong bonds like
steel and concrete. Both can be considered an ion-ion or ion-dipole which are the strongest inter
molecular forces of attraction. Also since everything we perceive has chemical bonds, it is also
applicable to all fields of work.
