My Reflection STS Packaging

The document discusses the author's reflection on their week-long observation of packaging waste generation. The author realized they generate a lot of paper and laminate waste from food purchases. They also observed consuming more paper and laminate packaged items like waffles and biscuits. Packaging materials are useful for protecting, storing, and transporting products, but can also cause pollution if not disposed of properly. Through this activity, the author learned the importance of responsible waste segregation and choosing appropriate packaging to reduce damage, waste, and negative environmental impacts.

My Reflection

Looking back at my week-long journey of observing and taking pictures of my packaging

wastes, I realized that I generate plenty of these materials in a day. For instance, last Wednesday,
I bought a couple of food products because I was bored and hungry; making me produce a lot of
laminate wastes and also paper that day. I also observed that I tend to consume more products that
are packaged in paper and laminates such as the waffles that I bought last Saturday and the biscuit
that I purchased from the vending machine last Monday. Additionally, I realized that I rarely
consume products that have metal or glass packaging and even the ones in plastic. This is why, in
a week, I had taken pictures of only one or two products having a metal or plastic packaging and
none of those that have glass packaging.

Upon doing this activity for about a week, I have come to a realization that these packaging
materials truly have a major impact and contribution in our daily errands and lifestyle. These
materials have various uses that can be very beneficial for us as they can provide convenience to
us and prevent our products from being damaged or broken. For example, paper, plastic, and
laminate packaging can be very helpful by making our lives easier when it comes to packing,
storing, and transporting food, drinks, and, other materials that we utilize and consume almost
every day. The same thing goes for metal, glass, and other packaging materials as they also help
secure products during shipping and protect them from damages. Moreover, these packaging tools
help prolong the shelf-life of food and drinks such as meat, fish, fruits, milk, and other products
that can spoil easily. They can also aid in the mass production of different tangible products as
shipping and distributing in different sectors worldwide has now become less of a burden through
these packaging materials. Furthermore, these materials have also become advantageous and
favorable in the market place as they can provide aesthetics for the product that can attract more
customers; making the product more profitable. Also, some materials, especially paper, can be
environment-friendly as they can be reused and recycled, and are biodegradable. Hence, the role
of these packaging materials in our society has become more widespread as we tend to utilize them
day by day for different purposes.

As there is a positive side, it cannot be denied that these materials also have disadvantages.
I realized that they can have a negative side effect if not disposed and managed properly. Plastics
and laminates, perhaps, can be toxic and harmful to our environment. They may cause pollution if
not thrown in the right way. In addition, metals such as steels are vulnerable to the effects of
corrosion; aluminum packaging, although resistant to corrosion, are also disadvantageous when it
comes to acidic food as they may end up tasting like aluminum itself. Glass packaging, on the
other hand, can also be inconvenient as it is much heavier compared to other packaging materials.
It is also fragile; thus, it needs to be handled with care and precaution because if a glass breaks, it
becomes much more dangerous than other materials. Paper packaging, despite of it being eco-
friendly, can also be less helpful when it comes to warm food and cold drinks as it turns soggy and
easily rips off.

Through this activity, therefore, I have learned to be more responsible of my actions,

especially when it comes to handling and disposing these materials. I have realized that we should
properly segregate these wastes, particularly plastics and laminates, in order for us to prevent
pollution in our surroundings. Also, I have learned that we must always be mindful of how we
choose different packaging materials and make sure that these products are the most appropriate
in tending our needs so as to avoid accidents, damage, and waste of resources. Lastly, I learned
that these packaging materials, despite of having a negative side, can be very useful and
advantageous not only personally, physically, or ecologically but also economically as it can create
progress in our society through transporting diverse domestic or local products to other countries.
