Assignment 1 Steel Structure Design

The document contains an assignment for a steel structure design course, with 4 questions about calculating tensile strength, compression resistance, and buckling resistance for steel members. Question 1 involves calculating tensile strength for flat bars with lap splices connected by bolts. Question 2 involves determining load capacities for a pin-jointed frame made of circular hollow sections. Drawings are provided to illustrate the member configurations.

Question 1

a) A flat bar, 300 mm wide and 15 mm thick, is to be used as a tie. Erection conditions require
that the bar be constructed from two lengths connected together with a lap splice using nine
M20 bolts, as shown in Figure 1a. Calculate the tensile strength of the bar, assuming grade
S235 steel.

b) If the middle row of the holes is change as shown in Figure 1b. Calculate the tensile strength
of the bar.

c) Compare your answer in Q1(a) and Q1(b). Give your opinion and state any assumption you
make.

d) If the applied tensile load, T is 25% higher than the tensile strength of the bar in Q1(b),
determine the minimum thickness of the bar.

Question 2
A pin-jointed frame with bracing system is show in Figure Q2 has 5.0 m height and 6.0 m
width. If all members are using CHS 219.1 x 10
i. Determine tensile resistance of the CHS 219.1 x 10.
ii. Determine compression resistance of the CHS 219.1 x 10.
