1. INTRODUCTION
This report ‘GT-MTHL- Geotechnical Report’ presents the data obtained from the field
for the boreholes drilled along the proposed alignment Module 18.
The Geotechnical Investigation field work was conducted from 16th April 2018 to
22ndJune 2018.
The principal objectives of the investigation were to obtain adequate information on the
bed stratigraphy, the type and strength of the soils / rocks below the ground bed and other
geotechnical details of relevance to decide and design the suitable type of foundation. The
entire work was carried out under thes upervision of client’s representatives. In order to
accomplish the above objectives the scope of work was to drill 8 Nos.of boreholes atthe
pier locations along the proposed alignment. The scope of work also includes carrying out
logging visually identifiable lithological and engineering characteristics of the soil and
rock samples, testing the samples in laboratory for their classification, index and
report.
The list of the geotechnical boreholes carried out at locations of various areas are
presented in Table 1

2. FIELD INVESTIGATION
The field investigation involves mobilization of drilling rigs and drilling accessories mounted on
it, marking the borehole location, shifting the machine at the designated location, boring in soil,
drilling in rock, carry out SPT and collection of UDS. A brief description of the various activities
is given below.

Boring was done in accordance with IS: 1892 -1979. The boreholes were advanced in the
soil using wash boring technique with the help of rotary drilling rig. The nominal
diameter of borehole in soil was150mm.The boring was continued upto the top of hard
stratum
Once the Hard stratum or rock surface was encountered the size of the bore hole was
reduced to NX size(76mm). Top of the rock surface was confirmed, either by the refusal
from standard penetration test N value or chiseling. In this hard stratum further work was
carried out by using NX core drilling with Double tube core barrel fitted with Diamond
studded bits at its bottom. The work was carried out as per IS: 6926-1973. The maximum
length of the drill (run) was maintained as1.50m or depends upon the site conditions

during drilling. At the end of each run the drill rod string withcore barrel was extracted
from the bore hole and core was recovered from the core barrel. Recovered
hard or rock cores were numbered and labeled serially and carefully transferred to in good
quality, sturdy, wooden core boxes and preserved. The core recovery percentage was
100}. Rock Quality Designation (RQD) wasalso recorded. Rock Quality Designation
(RQD) = (Total Length of core pieces of 100mm & above inLength / length of run) x
100}. Solid Core Recovery (SCR) = (Total Length of core pieces of full diameter in
Length / length of run) x 100}. TCR, SCR and RQD were computed for every drilled run
were recorded. Small disturbed samples were obtained from the split spoon sampler after
Undisturbed Soil Samples were collected in cohesive soil using thin walled Shelby tubes
with samples having nominal diameter of 100mm and minimum length of 450mm.
Disturbed soil samples were collected from the bailer of the percussion boring rig.
3. LABORATORY TESTING
Selected soil and rock samples, collected during boring/drilling of boreholes were
specified. The samples to be tested, type and number of laboratory tests to be carried out
thin walled tubes were collected from the boreholes. The soil samples were visually
identified and described in accordance with relevant IS codes and thereafter packed,
labeled, sealed and dispatched to the laboratory. The classification, index property, NMC,
specific gravity, density, tests were carried out on the soil samples. The Uniaxial
compressive strength, Point Load Index, Modulus of Elasticity.unit weight and specific
gravity tests were carried out on the rock core samples. All these tests were carried out in
our geotechnical laboratory at Navi Mumbai, in accordance with relevant parts of Indian

The particle size distribution was determined for a total of 4 soil samples in accordance
withthe method described in IS:2720 (Part 4). Compliance with the Standard, with respect
field test.In SPT samples, the quantity of soil available for testing is typically about 100g.
This sample quantity is considered representative where grain sizes range up to 4.75mm
(i.e. to coarse sand size). Wheresignificant quantities of coarser particles are present, the
only.
Sedimentation analyses have been performed for a total of 4 soil samples in accordance
with the hydrometer method described in IS: 2720 (Part 4). The analysis provides an
estimate of the particle size distribution for the fine fraction (<75μm) of a soil sample. The
observing the change in fluid density with the hydrometer device, is theoretically related
The Atterberg Limits comprising liquid limit, plastic limit and plasticity index total 7 tests
were determined in accordance with the relevant methods described in IS: 2720 (Part 5).
Theliquid limit has been determined using the Casagrande apparatus method. The soil
sample preparation, inaccordance with the code of practice, included removal of soil
coarser particles was present, it should be recognized that the Atterberg Limits results are
representative of the relatively fine soil fraction, and not of the complete soil sample.
The particle density was determined for a total of 4samples in accordance with the
smallpycknometer method described in IS: 2720 (Part 3/Sec 1). Prior to testing, samples
Unit Weight & Specific Gravity of Rock specimen were determined for a total of 5 rock

Uniaxial compressive strength for a total of 41 cylindrical rock specimens was determined
inaccordance with the methods of ISRM. The uniaxial compressive strength of the
specimens were correctedfor a height to diameter ratio of two for specimens whose height

The pH, Chloride, Sulphate and Organic Matter was determined for a total of 8 samples
for Soil and 8 Samples for water. The tests were carried out as per the relevant Indian
