Basic Concepts About Affective Trait

A. Definitions of the concept TRAIT

 A trait is a characteristic pattern of behavior or conscious motive which can be self‐


assessed or assessed by peers.

 Trait is a distinguishing quality or characteristic, typically one belonging to a person.

 A trait is a conceptual characterization of the reactive nature of an individual based


upon certain behavioral characteristics, particularly those manifesting the
constitutional nature of the individual (Kingsbury, 1938).

 It is a component of a person's behavior that is assumed to serve as an explanation of


his or her enduring personal characteristics.

 A trait is a relatively stable characteristic that causes individuals to behave in certain


ways.

B. Definitions of Affective Trait

 Affective trait is a variety of traits and dispositions that are different from knowledge,
reasoning and skills (Hohn, 1995).

 It is the emotions and feelings that one has toward someone or something (Cajigal &
Muntuano, 2014).

 It defined as a tendency to respond to specific classes of stimuli in a predetermined,


affect-based manner.

C. Examples of Human Traits

Attitudes Predisposition to respond favorably or
unfavorably to specified situations, objects,
institutions or persons
Interests Personal preference for certain kinds of
activities
Values Importance, worth or usefulness of modes
of conduct and end states of existence
Opinions Beliefs about specific occurrences and
situations
Preferences Desire to select one object over another
Motivation Desire and willingness to be engaged in
behavior including intensity and
involvement
Academic Self-Concept Self-perception of competence in school
and learning
Self-Esteem Attitudes toward oneself, degree or self-
respect, worthiness or desirability of self-
concept
Locus of Control Self-perception of whether success and
failure is controlled by the student or by
external influences
Emotional Development Growth, change and awareness of emotions
and ability to regulate emotional expression
Social Relationships Nature of interpersonal interactions and
functioning in group setting
Altruism Willingness and prosperity to help others
Moral Development Attainment of ethical principles that guide
decision-making and behavior
Classroom Development Nature of feeling tones and interpersonal
relationship in a class
