Short Column Vs Long Column

Short columns have an effective length to least lateral dimension ratio of less than or equal to 12 and a slenderness ratio less than or equal to 40. They have a very low buckling tendency and high load carrying capacity compared to long columns of the same cross-sectional area. Long columns have a ratio of effective length to least lateral dimension greater than 12 and a slenderness ratio greater than 40. They buckle more easily and have a lower load carrying capacity than short columns of the same cross-sectional area.
