Pupils: Materials that absorbed
water
What materials absorbed water?
Which did not?
Pupils: Materials that absorbed
water are paper, sponge, towel,
etc.
Pupils: Materials that did not
absorbed water are plastics,
metals, etc.

3. Motivation:
Class, have you seen a boat?
Pupils: Yes Ma’am.

Pupils: On the lake or at the sea.
Very good! Now, when a boat is on the
lake what will happen?
Pupils: The boat will float.
Very good! How about if the boat is full
of fishes, what will happen?
Pupils: The boat will sink.
Excellent!

B. Development of the Lesson:

1. Presentation:
Today we will learn what materials
float and what materials sink.

Discussion:
 Sink means to fall to the bottom of water,
Float means to stay on top.
 Some things float on top of water, some things
stay submerged partway down, and some things
sink.
 Some things sink very fast and some things
sink very slowly.
 An object’s shape can affect its ability to
Float, but some materials float no matter what their
Shape – such as Styrofoam and balsa wood.
 Some things float at first, but then sink as
they absorb water or take water on through holes.
Class, think of the materials that are made
of wood. Give me an example of the things that
are made of wood.
Pupils: Materials made of
wood such as chairs,
tables, etc.
Do they float?
Pupils: No Ma’am, it will
sink.
Very good! Do we have another
example of things that will sink?
Pupils: Yes Ma’am,
materials made of metals
usually sink.
Give me an example of the things that
will sink.
Pupils: nails, coin, rock,
spoon, scissors,etc

Very good! Class, how about

example of things that float?
Pupils: Materials made of
plastics and light
materials will float.
Can you give me an example of things
that will float?
Pupils: Yes Ma’am.
Rubber duck, straw, ship,
floaters, etc.
Excellent! Why do some people use
floaters (salbabida) in swimming pools?
Pupils: People use floaters
in swimming pool to keep
them afloat in water.
Why large boats or ships float on water?
Pupils: Large ships and
boat float on water
because the upward push
of the water is greater
than their weights.
Class, why life vests keep you afloat in
water?
Pupils: Just like large
ships and boat, there is
an upward force that will
push us up and with the
help of the vests, it will
keep us afloat.

Very good class!

2. Generalization:
Class, if we will place the materials one at
a time in the water, what will happen?
Pupils: Some materials will float
and other materials will sank.

3. Application:
This time class, I will group you into 3
groups. Now, listen carefully as I discuss to you
each instructions/directions.

Each group will have several things to use in

the said activity. Place the materials one at a time
in the water and record what is your observation. On
the table, list the materials that float on water and which
did not. Present your output in front of the class.

Materials that float Materials that sink

4. Values Integration
Class, what materials should we bring in riding
a boat when sailing?
Pupils: We should be aware in
bringing materials when sailing.
It is better to bring lighter
materials so that the boat will
not sink.

Very well said!

IV. Evaluation
Direction: Classify the materials according to
whether they float or sink in a body of water.

___________1. Basket __________6. Styrofoam

___________2. Containers __________7. Life jacket
