Gyro Compass Speed Aerror v1.0

1. Gyrocompass speed error (SE) is the angle between the gyro meridian and true meridian caused by vessel speed when no other external influences act on the gyrocompass. 2. SE depends on vessel speed, course, and latitude according to the formula: SE = Speed * cos Course / (900 * cos Lat). 3. The magnitude and direction of SE varies based on the vessel's course, with maximum error to the north and south and no error to the east and west.

GYRO-COMPASS SPEED ERROR

1. Gyro Speed Error: ( SE ) the angle formed between the gyro meridian and true meridian;
(in case when the gyrocompass does not occur any other external influences)

Speed * cos Course

SE =
900 * cos Lat

where: ( SE ) [ °.0 ] gyro Speed Error

(Speed) [ Kn ] vessel speed
(Course) [ °.0 ] ship course
(Lat) [ °.0 ] latitude

Gyrocompass speed error depends on: vessel speed

ship course
latitude

Variation of the speed error is depending on the course of vessel: It is maximum to the North (0°) and to the South (180°)
It is null to the East (90°) and to the West (270°)
It is negative for the quadrants I (0° - 90°) and IV (270° - 360°)
It is positive for the quadrants II (90° - 180°) and III (180° - 270°)
