Signal and Systems Minor

This document contains 9 problems related to Fourier analysis and linear time-invariant systems. The problems cover topics such as determining the frequency response and output of an LTI system given its impulse response, calculating Fourier series coefficients of periodic signals, representing two-dimensional signals like images using Fourier series, using properties of Fourier series coefficients to find relationships between signals, determining periodic signals from properties of their Fourier coefficients, analyzing the input-output behavior of LTI systems with periodic and non-periodic inputs, and evaluating filter outputs using the Fourier series representation of the input signal.

Problem sheet–4

1. System response using Fourier Transform

Determine the output of LTI system with the following frequency response.

Assume 𝑥(𝑡) is a periodic signal with period 2.

Prove that if ℎ(𝑡) is even then 𝐻(𝜔) is also even. Is 𝐻(𝜔) causal?

2. Fourier series representation of a signal

Determine 𝑎𝑘 for the following signal with period 2.

3. Fourier series representation of a chess board

A chess board image has to be represented using a Fourier series. Think about a possible representation. (Hint:
image is a two dimensional signal).

4. Using properties of Fourier Series

Consider the signals 𝑔(𝑡) and 𝑥(𝑡) given below of fundamental period 𝑇 = 4. Note that the derivative of signal
𝑥(𝑡) is same as signal 𝑔(𝑡). Find the Fourier coefficients of signal 𝑔(𝑡). Using the derivative property of Fourier
series coefficients, find the same for signal 𝑥(𝑡).
5. Fourier representation of an Impulse Train
Find the Fourier series representation of the impulse train given by

𝑥(𝑡) = ∑ 𝛿(𝑡 − 𝑘𝑇)

𝑘= −∞
Represent the derivative of 𝑔(𝑡) in the question above in terms of a shifted impulse train and hence find the
Fourier coefficients of 𝑔(𝑡) in terms of Fourier Coefficients of x(𝑡). Verify it with your answer for question 4.

6. Relationship between Fourier coefficients

Let 𝑥1 (𝑡) be a continuous-time periodic signal with fundamental frequency ω1and Fourier coefficients 𝑎𝑘 . Given
that
𝑥2 (𝑡) = 𝑥1 (1 − 𝑡) + 𝑥1 (𝑡 − 1)

How is the fundamental frequency 𝜔2 of 𝑥2 (𝑡) related to 𝜔1 ? Also, find a relationship between the Fourier series
coefficients 𝑏𝑘 of 𝑥2 (𝑡) and the coefficients 𝑎𝑘 . You may use the properties of the Fourier series coefficients.

7. Signal Determination from Fourier coefficient properties

Suppose we are given the following information about a signal 𝑥(𝑡):
a. 𝑥(𝑡) is real and odd.
b. 𝑥(𝑡) is periodic with period T = 2 and has Fourier coefficients 𝑎𝑘 .
c. 𝑎𝑘 = 0 for |𝑘| > 1.
1 2
d. 2 ∫0 |𝑥(𝑡)|2 𝑑𝑡 = 1.
Specify 2 different signals with the above properties.

8. Periodic input to a LTI system

a. In general in a LTI system, periodic input leads to a periodic output. Is it still valid if ℎ(𝑡) =
sin(𝜔𝑡) 𝑢(𝑡)?
b. For a system to produce useful (predictable) response, how does the duration of an input signal depend
upon ℎ(𝑡)?

9. Filter output evaluation using Fourier Series

Consider a continuous-time LTI system S whose frequency response is:

𝐻(𝜔) = 1 |𝜔| ≥ 250

0 𝑜𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑤𝑖𝑠𝑒
𝜋
When the input to this system is a signal 𝑥(𝑡)with fundamental period 𝑇 = and Fourier series coefficients 𝑎𝑘 , it is
7
found that the output 𝑦(𝑡) is identical to 𝑥(𝑡). For what values of 𝑘 is it guaranteed that 𝑎𝑘 = 0?
