Instructional Software Lesson Idea Life Cycle of A Plant
Instructional Software Lesson Idea Life Cycle of A Plant
Content Standard Addressed: S1L1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the basic needs
of plants and animals.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL): This instructional software will help all students in the classroom
because it is engaging and able to be viewed outside of the classroom and replayed many times if needed.
This tutorial helps visual learners and aural learners stay focused and interested. The closed captioning will
help students with hearing impairments learn alongside peers. The audio in the video will help visually
impaired students also gain information alongside peers. After viewing the video, students will have a voice
and choice to decide which plant they would like to observe for their own projects from a collection of seeds,
allowing them to creatively express what they know.
Lesson idea implementation: To begin the lesson, the students will be encouraged to share what they know
about plants. The teacher will write all this information on the white board or bulletin board and allow all
students to share. Then, the teacher will introduce the BrainPop video and ask students to remember one
thing they learned from the video. After viewing, the teacher will again ask students to share what they know.

The teacher will go over any new vocabulary with all students and again review the life cycle of a plant, using
visuals or props to help engage students. The teacher will then offer students the choice to plant lima beans
seeds or snap pea seeds. The students will research about their plant in groups with other students with the
same plant. They will follow instructions by the teacher to set up their cup pot to plant their seeds, using
scaffolding techniques.
This lesson plan will be extended for 2-3 weeks so students can observe the growth of their plants and collect
data. They will compare their plants to others and share their data with the class. The class as a whole will
continue this lesson by having a class plant that the students can help take care of throughout the school year
by watering it and making sure it has enough soil and sun. The students will also take a nature walk with their
teacher to collect information about different plants and how they grow. The students will keep all their
information in a science journal that the teacher will check periodically for information collected on the plant
and the number of days it takes to sprout and grow into the lima bean or snap pea. The teacher will take
photos of each student with his/her plant and make an E-book that the students can view at the end of the
lesson to conclude it as a celebration of their plant’s life and the growth of the bean/pea. The lesson can be
moved up to a LoTi 4 if this E-book is shared with parents or other classes in the school.
Reflective Practice: This lesson idea can impact student learning by offering a meaningful way to create and
learn at the same time. Students will be proud of their plants and want to share the progress of their plants
with others. The lesson could extend into the water cycle or different types of weather to review how/when
certain plants grow and what may affect their growth. Another technology I would use to enhance this
product would be the Book Creator for iPad app that would allow students to create a book about the life
cycle of their own plants to keep to look back and share with their friends, family, and other students.
