Course Synopsis:

This course offers students an opportunity to reflect on language and ideology and how they impact
the society. Some current societal issues that touch on the aspects of education, gender biasness, age
group, politics, etc. It examines how the English Language linguistic structure, vocabulary,
pronunciation, and discourse create public contexts such as the law and education effects and
strategies in the media on the development of language. The focus will also discuss the way language
is being used in general.

Learning Outcome:

At the end of the course, students are able to:


1. Identify the aspects in which language is used to reflect ideologies; (PLO1)
2. Differentiate the linguistic features in language that shows the gender or age of the
writers/speakers;(PLO2)
3. Differentiate the linguistic features in language that shows the identity and social classes of the
writers/speakers; (PLO2)
4. Analyze the underlying values/assumptions/biases of the writers/speakers in the way these
ideologies are being represented through the language used. (PLO3)
