The Journalist’s Checklist

You should be able to say yes to the following questions before and after you have written
your article.

General checklist for all forms of writing

1. Have I written down my name and the date I wrote the article?
2. Does my paper have the correct margins? (1 inch on the left, .5 inch on the right)
3. Have I indented properly?
4. Is my penmanship neat and readable?
5. Have I followed all other instructions?
6. Have I done the writing task required?

Checklist for feature writing

1. Have I properly analyzed the required writing task?


2. Is my theme correct?
3. Is my introduction related to the key ideas and words of the theme?
4. Does the body of my feature story expound on the theme?
5. Does the conclusion of my feature story connect to the theme?
6. Are my quotations and attributions correct?
7. Have I maximized my wordcraft? (show, don’t tell; figures of speech; being specific)

Checklist for news writing

1. Have I written my byline?


2. Have I written my dateline?
3. Have I followed the Inverted Pyramid format?
4. Are all my 5Ws and 1H present in the article?
5. Have I correctly used attribution?
6. Have I used the Identification Principle?
7. Have I followed the AP Style for numbers, units of measurement, etc?
8. Have I written one idea per sentence and one sentence per paragraph?
9. Have I written ### at the end of my news article?

Checklist for editorial writing

1. Have I analyzed the issue or current event?


2. Have I chosen the appropriate news peg?
3. Can I back up my stand or opinion logically and with substance?
4. Is my language formal and strong enough?
5. Have I summarized my arguments?
6. Have I made an appeal in the conclusion?
