Our lesson for this morning is all about


Making Verbs Agree with Irregular nouns
Used as Subjects. Before that let us define
first the word noun.

Do you know what is noun?

Matt!
Matt: Noun is a name of a place,
things, person or things.

Do you have an idea on what is an irregular


noun?
All: No ma’am!

An irregular noun is a noun that becomes


plural by changing its spelling.

They form there plurals in either of the


following ways:

1. By changing the spelling of the


singular form.
a. Vowel change

goose-geese foot-feet
man-men woman-women

b. By changing the vowel and losing a


final consonant

cactus-cacti datum-data
alumnus-alumni crisis-crises

c. By adding –e at the end of the


singular form
vertebra-vertebrae
larva-larvae

d. By adding a syllable or changing the


form

child-children
ox-oxen
appendix-appendices

There are some nouns that end in –s are


always plural. They do not have a singular
form.

scissors pants

When irregular nouns are used as subjects in


a sentence, make sure to apply the subject
verb agreement.

A singular subject must take a singular verb


and a plural subject must take a plural verb.

Singular: My child is in the school.


Plural: My children are in the school.

When I arrived home I had to change


my (clothes, clothed)

I broke my right foot while playing


basketball and it (hurt hurts) so badly.

The men (was, were) fixing the hole in the


street.

We (keep, keeps) mice in our classroom.

Gina has a two pet mice ant it (eats, eat)


cheese everyday.

G. Generalization

What is the major rule of subject-verb


agreement?
All: If the subject is singular the verb
is singular too. If the subject is plural,
the verb is plural too.

Choose the verb that agrees with the subject.
