EXPRESSING OFFER AND SUGGESTION

Pendahuluan

1. Deskripsi
Dalam modul ini Anda akan menganalisa dan memahami ungkapan tawaran dan saran.
Anda juga diharapkan dapat menganalisa tujuan atau fungsi sosial.
2. Tujuan Pembelajaran
Melalui kegiatan proses pembelajaran ini, peserta didik diharapkan dapat:
a. Menganalisis fungsi sosial dalam teks tentang meminta dan memberi saran dan
tawaran sesuai dengan konteks penggunaannya.
b. Menganalisis struktur teks dalam teks tentang meminta dan memberi saran dan
tawaran sesuai dengan konteks penggunaannya.
c. Menganalisis unsur kebahasaan dalam teks tentang meminta dan memberi saran
dan tawaran sesuai dengan konteks penggunaannya.

Melalui diskusi kelompok, peserta didik diharapkan dapat:

a. Menyusun teks lisan dan tertulis mengenai meminta dan memberi saran dan
tawaran dengan menggunakan struktur teks dan unsur kebahasaan yang tepat
sesuai dengan konteks penggunaannya dengan benar.
b. Mengkomunikasikan secara lisan dan tertulis ungkapan tentang meminta dan
memberi saran dan tawaran dengan menggunakan struktur teks dan unsur
kebahasaan yang tepat sesuai dengan konteks penggunaannya dengan benar.
SUGGESTION
What is suggestion?

Suggestion is about say or write our ideas about what people should do.

What is the purpose of suggestion?

1. Suggest means to present a suggestion that is to introduce or propose an idea or a plan


for consideration. It can be accepted or refused
2. Suggestions are abstract and can be in form of solution, advice, plan, and idea.

1. Giving suggestion with “let’s”
Let's comes from the word let us, which means: "I have a suggestion for us" (saya punya
suatu saran untuk kita)
Example :

Case Suggestion
Let’s go to a movie
I’m bored
Let’s not go to beach. Let’s stay home instead

2. Giving suggestion with “could”


 “Could” can be used to give suggestion to others

Case Suggestion
We could go on a picnic.
What should we do tomorrow?
We could go to Yulia’s party.

 “Could” can be used to give offer or possibility to others

Case Suggestion
You could talk to your teacher.
I’m having trouble in math class You could ask Anna to help you with your

3. Giving suggestion with “why don’t”


 “Why don’t” is the most important phrase in English to provide suggestion friendly.
Example:
Why don’t we go to a movie?
(In the context of that sentence, "Why do not we go = let’s go")
Why don’t you come around eight?
(In the context of that sentence means: I suggest you to come around eight)

Note :
1. The verb "suggest" can be followed by either:
- should + verb = I suggest (that) we should go to the library.
- a verb (in the subjunctive form)= I suggest (that) we go to the library.
2. "That" is optional:
- "I suggest that we should visit London."
- "I suggest we should visit London."

DIFFERENCE
 Suggestion
a. Means to present a suggestion that is to introduce o propose an idea or a plan for
consideration.
b. A suggestion is usually an expression of an idea for someone else to do something.
 Offering
a. Means to give something physical or abstract to someone, which can be taken as a
gift or a trade.
b. An offer is an expression of willingness to do something.
The example of conversation:
Example 1

Dina and Andy are best friends. They are going home together. Now, they are in the bus stop
near their school.

Dina : We have been waiting for almost an hour.

Andy : Yes, I think the bus will never come.

Dina : How if we walking home instead of waiting for the bus?

Andy : Good idea, but you bring many books and it looks so heavy. Can I take some of them?

Dina : Thanks. You’re so kind.

Andy : It’s okay. By the way, do you know that the new restaurant near our house has been
opened?

Dina : Yes. My friend told me it has a new and delicious menu.

Andy : Why don’t we go there and try the meals?

Dina : That sounds good. When?

Andy : How about Saturday evening? I will pick you up, if you like.

Dina : Alright. That would be lovely.

Beny : Hei Anton, why do you look so sad?

Anton : I have a serious problem today. I have just lost my wallet.

Beny : I think you should be more careful with your belongings.

Anton : Yeah, I think so. This is my fault.

Beny : If I may suggest, you should go to the park and look for it more detail.

Anton : I have looked for it for hours but I did not find it. Do you have another suggestion?

Beny : Hmm… You would better tell the securities to help you to find it and also announce it
to the visitors.

what you will do tomorrow.

Shinta : No, thank you. My mother doesn’t like concert and she doesn’t like if I watch concert.
