The Role of Engineering Drawing Production Review
The Role of Engineering Drawing Production Review
There are many subjects in Industrial Engineering which can help us understand the process of
the industry and how to manage them. One of these subjects is Engineering Drawing. Before there are
words and sentences, drawing is the way to people communicate with each other. According to the
dictionary, one of the definition of drawing is “a picture or diagram made with a pencil, pen, or crayon
rather than paint, especially one drawn in monochrome.” Engineering Drawing is a form of graphic
communication between engineers to explain their thoughts and ideas when words are not enough to
express them with and can also be kept as record of how the process goes. Usually, it is the engineer
who designed the product that makes the engineering drawing and gives it to the engineer who makes
the product so there will be no miscommunication on how the product should be made. Without
engineering drawing, the product that we want to make can be different in color, size, shape, and angle
from what we wish it to be like. Engineering drawing are often used by many engineering fields, but not
limited to, like architects, civil engineering, machine engineering, electrical engineering, industrial
engineering, etc.
The main purpose of engineering drawing in industrial engineering is to develop the skill to read
construction drawing for machine or buildings and manufacturing drawing of a product. Other purpose
of engineering drawing is to produce a sketch based on current picture and have the ability gain
information from calculating sheets or diagram to make engineering drawing for manufacturers,
installers, and fabricators. Some industrial engineers sometime help the engineer who designs make
them and some even make a design themselves.
Engineer drawing is not only used by engineers but also common people in daily activities. For
example, sometimes when people buy furniture they are not assembled. The company or the person
who sells them gives the buyers an assembly plan to help them make the furniture so it is assembled
correctly. The assembly plan is an engineer drawing. People who wants to make a house or businessmen
who wants to make a building for their company also uses engineer drawing. They must read it so they
know their building is the same as what they imagine and sometimes a few that could makes a simple
sketch to show the architect or builders of how they want their building to look like. It mustn’t even have
to be a good drawing or have to be an artist tp draw because even though their sketch isn't perfect, they
at least can communicate when words aren't enough to describe them.
To make a proper engineering drawing, you must have the ability to draw them so there will be
no mistake because precision is very important in engineering drawing because they must be scaled,
labelled, and arranged exactly as they should be. These abilities are Information Gathering, Idea
Generation, Concept Enhancement, and Design Visualization. Information Gathering is being able to
collect data from all kinds of sources such as local database, internet, newspaper, books, and other
references. The information is not just in a form of picture but can also be in a writing form. We must
understand which information will be useful and how to apply it by analyzing the picture or data that we
have gathered. Then there is Idea Generation, which is where we make an idea of a product based on
the information we have gathered and putting it into picture by sketching it with a simple concept using
hand-writing. The simple concept will be upgraded into a more defined concept with international
standard for engineering drawing by taking the next step which is the Concept Enhancement. One of the
international standards for engineering drawing about the general principles of presentation is ISO 128
which contains twelve parts and had been initiated between 1996 and 2003. And last but not least is
Design Visualization where we have to make the enhanced concept into a visual thing with absolute
while suitable with the shape and accurateness as our choosing. Design Visualization often uses
Computer Aided Design (CAD) to help them make engineering drawing because it increases the accuracy
and it take less time than drawing it by hand.
Engineering drawing includes various common features such as geometry, dimensions,
tolerances, material, finish, and various types of line such as visible, center, hidden, cutting plane,
section, and phantom. The lines are given a letter and each letter is specific to a certain line so you
cannot just name any line with any letter, for example the line that is called “type A” is the thickest of all
the lines and is drawn using an HB pencil. When making an engineer drawing, it must be viewed from all
angle to show and understand all the features and not mistaking the shape and form of the product.
There are two kinds of projection and that is parallel projection and perspective projection. In
perspective projection there are linear perspective and actual perspective. The Orthographic projection
is one of the parallel projection where we see the product from front, right, left, bottom, top and back
according to the rules of first-angle or third angle production. Other parallel projection is Oblique
projection. It is a simple type of graphical projection compared to the other projection and is used for
producing pictorial. In Oblique there are cabinet, cavalier, clinographic and shade and shadow. In parallel
projection there is also Axonometric where the object can be rotated along one or more of its axes
relative to the plane of projection. There are three types of axonometric projection and that is isometric,
dimetric, and trimetric projection.
Engineering drawing is a very crucial part of the industry process because it is the base of making
a product and without it the end result will turn out bad. That is why all engineers must learn how to
make a proper engineering drawing using the right tools and skills so the engineer who makes them
understand what the engineer wants and will make them with accuracy.
