Translation studies is an academic interdisciplinary with the systematic study of the theory,
description and application of translation, interpreting and localization. As an interdisciplinary,
Translation Studies borrows much from the various fields of study that support translation. These
include comparative literature, computer science, history, linguistics, philology, philosophy,
semiotics and terminology.

The Term translation studies was coined by the Amsterdam-based American scholar James S.
Holmes in his paper ,,The name and nature of translation studies,, In English, writers occasionally use
the term translatology (and less commonly traductology) to refer to translation studies, and the
corresponding French term for the discipline is usually traductologie (as in the Société Francaise de
Traductologie). In the US there is a preference for the term Translation and Interpreting Studies (as in
the American translation and Interpreting Studies Association), although European tradition
includes interpreting within translation studies (as in the European Society for Translation Studies).

Translation – tradition, history

Translation has a very long history (tradition in Latin, translation of the Bible in different language
communities) but the theoretical research has begun relatively lately. Some systematic attempts can
seen in the 19th century, but a separate scientific discipline dealing with translation-translation
studies, translatology – was established only in the 20th century.

Approaches to translation
In the course of the history of modern research there have been different approaches to translation,
such as linguistic approach (Nida 1964, Catford 1967) descriptive approach (Toury 1980, 1995)
functional approach (Reiss and Vermeer, 1989,200) cultural approach ( Bassnett and Lefevre, 1990)
integrated, interdisciplinary approach (Snell-Hornby, 1988). In linguistic approaches attention is paid
only to language (especially one-to-one equivalence) whereas in other approaches other facts are
also taken into consideration.

Interdisciplinary
Translation studies has an interdisciplinary character. It is based on general and applied linguistics,
cultural history, literary studies, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, sociocultural and area studies,
pragmatics and the study of special subjects (terminology, language for specific purposes).
Classification according to Slovak tradition
If we look at translation studies in more detail following the Slovak tradition, (Popovič, Vilikovský)
we can speak about:
1. General theory of translation (oral and writer activities and forms of translation)
2. Study of special disciplines of translation, translation of particular text types
1. The study of special language (non-literary) texts translation (social sciences, natural science
texts, institutional texts, technical texts).
2. The study of literaly texts translation (the Bible and religious texts, drama and film)
3. The study of general information and advertising texts translation (general information texts-
journalistic texts and advertisements)
4. The study of translation for electronic media

Praxeology of translation deals with:

- Translation pedagogy (translator training)
- Translation aids (dictionaries..)
- Translation criticism
- The sociological aspects of translation
- The editorial aspects of translation

Pure and Applied TS

Translation studies is sometimes devided into pure and applied
1. Pure translation studies:
1. theoretical – general
- partial
a. medium restricted
b. area restricted
c. rank restricted
d. text-type restricted
e. time restricted
f. problem restricted

2. descriptive
a. product oriented
b. process oriented
c. function oriented

2. Applied TS
a. translation pedagogy
b. translation aids
c. translation criticism
