Basic Productivity Tools (BPT)

This document describes a 2nd grade science lesson on the geographic regions of Georgia. Students will be split into groups and assigned one region to research using PowerPoint. Over two days, each group will create a presentation on the plants, animals, and habitats of their assigned region. On the third day, groups will present their presentations to the class. A pre and post assessment will evaluate student learning. The teacher believes student-led peer teaching helps improve information retention.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): PowerPoint is a great way to help kids organize their thoughts and
create a better understanding of content for themselves. For kids with auditory disabilities, this is a great tool
because they have visuals and can read what is written on the presentation. For kids with visual impairments,
they will be able to hear their classmates speaking about the content or they could use the make a video
feature and kids could hear audio straight from the power point. This tool enhances the learning environment
because it gives the students a chance to create something they can use to help their classmates understand
an area of content and in doing so helps them better understand it too.

Lesson idea implementation: Students will be given pre-assessment questions about the Geographic regions
of GA (Blue Ridge Mountains, Piedmont, Coastal Plains, Valley and Ridge, and Appalachian Plateau) through
PowerPoint and be given an assignment of creating their own presentations. The students will be given the
task to teach their fellow classmates about their assigned region. Children will be split up into groups and be
told what region they have. The students will use classroom or at home computers to research their region.
The students will be given a time frame of 2 days to complete this assignment, and presentation will
start on the third. The group will Use PowerPoint to present to the class all they know about that region: what
kind of animals live there, what kind of plants grow there, where in GA this region is, what the habitats are
like, etc. Each student will be given a task to perform in their group and each group member will report on
each student the level of participation in the group. The group as a whole will be graded on the presentation
itself as well as how it is presented to the class. The entire class will be graded on what they’ve learned from
their classmates through a quiz.

Reflective Practice: I think peer teaching is very useful in a classroom and when students are in charge of
providing information, they better retain it themselves as well. To further extend the lesson we could go out
into some different regions of GA and actually observe some of the different geographical characteristics of
each region.
