e) Estimate the percentage of students who bought more than 50 books. (2 marks)

2. 300 students in a college are required to enroll in only one of the courses as listed. Numbers of students
joining each course are recorded in the contingency table below:

Course A Course B Course C

Diploma 40 85 45
Bachelor’s Degree 25 77 28

a) Find the probability that a randomly selected student

i) studies diploma in the college. (2 marks)
ii) studies bachelor’s degree and enrolls in Course C. (2 marks)
iii) is neither studying diploma nor enrolling in Course C. (3 marks)
iv) enrolls in Course B, given that the student is studying diploma. (3 marks)
b) Are the events “studying diploma” and “enrolls in Course A” independent? Explain. (3 marks)
c) Are the events “studying diploma” and “enrolls in Course B” mutually exclusive? Explain. (2 marks)

3. In a library, 40% of the books are published for more than 30 years. A researcher selects 8 books at random.

a) Find the probabilities that 3 to 5 books are published for more than 30 years. (3 marks)
b) Find the probabilities that more than 2 of the books are published in less than 30 years’ time. (4 marks)
c) What is the expected number of books that are published within the recent 30 years? (1 mark)

4. Weight of a cake produced by a local bakery is normally distributed with mean 500g and standard deviation
87g.

a) What is the probability that a cake will be less than 450g? (3 marks)
b) In a batch of 50 cakes, how many cakes will have weights more than 450g? (2 marks)
c) The bakers are able to improve their consistency such that only 5% of the cakes are less than 430g and
the mean weight is remained. What is the new standard deviation? (3 marks)
5. The following table shows the years of experience (X) and annual sales (Y) of 10 salespersons:
