Mori in Andhra gets Smart Digital village tag

Mori, a tiny village under Sakhinetipalli mandal in East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh, has
sealed its place on India’s digital map by transforming completely into a Smart Digital Village,
in every sense of the term.

All the 1189 households in the village with a population of 4500 became fully digital as Chief
Minister N Chandrababu Naidu finally launched the AP FiberNet project that will provide
internet at a speed of 15 mbps, WiFi, a telephone connection and 250CABLE television
channels (using a triple-play set-top box) for a total price of Rs 149 per month.

Odisha’s World famous 11-day gala festival Bargarh Dhanua Jatra is all set to begin on 2
January 2017. All rituals were performed before Goddess Samaleswari, the presiding deity of
the event. Dhanu Jatra is an annual drama-based open air theatrical performance celebrated in a 6
km radius in and around Bargarh municipality. It is considered to be the world’s largest open air
theatrical festival.

India’s first laser technology-based advanced AVMS RTO check-post at Shamlaji

Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani dedicated India’s first laser technology-based advanced
AVMS RTO check-post at Shamlaji of Aravalli district. The check-post isEQUIPPED with
advanced ray technology with a cost of Rs 4.72 crore. Along with this programme, Rupani also
laid foundation stones of various developmental works worth Rs 30 crore in tribal area of
Aravalli district.

India successfully test-fires intercontinental ballistic missile Agni-IV

India has successfully tested the Agni-IV ballistic missile, which has a strike range of 4,000km,
from the Wheeler Island off Odisha coast. The actual operational induction of the missile, which
was tested for a range of only 3,000 km, will take another couple of years. The road-mobile
Agni-IV and Agni-V, in turn, are specifically meant for deterrence against China, which can
target any Indian city with its formidable inventory of missiles.

Sikkim became India’s first fully organic state in 2016

Sikkim became India’s first fully organic state, besides being adjudged the cleanest state, overall
best in education and as a tourist destination, while the famed Kanchenjunga National Park was
inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Around 75,000 hectares of agricultural land were gradually converted to certified organic land by
implementing practices and principles as per guidelines laid down in National Programme for
Organic Production. It took the state 13 years to fully implement organic farming since the idea
was mooted way back in 2003.

AIIMS partners with MobiKwik to go cashless

AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences) Delhi has partnered with MobiKwik to go
cashless. Resident doctors, staff and visitors can pay with MobiKwik in the institution’s
cafeteria. Payment of doctor’s consultation, tests and other services will be made cashless by the
first week of January 2017.

The Institute was established in 1956 and operates autonomoustly under the Ministry of Health
and Family Welfare. Daily, over 25000 patients visit the facility to receive best in class treatment
for their ailments.

India 3rd among nations offering highest salaries to expats

India has ranked third among the countries offering the highest average annual salary to
expatriates, according to HSBC Holdings data. Notably, Switzerland offers an average salary of
$188,275 a year to expats, the highest in the world and almost twice the global average. Further,
the best employment packages, including health benefits, are found in Middle East countries like
Bahrain.

CCMB signs MoUs with 4 start-ups

Four biology start-up firms have signed up with the city-based Centre for Cellular and Molecular
Biology (CCMB) to incubate their companies at Innovation Hub (iHUB). The CCMB, a research
establishment of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), in its efforts to engage
with industry and to translate its own research, had in October last year launched an Innovation
Hub (iHUB@CCMB) in its medical biotechnology complex

After the launch of Innovation Hub, this for the first time that four biology start-up companies –
Oncosimis, Virupaksha Life Sciences, Theranosis and Bioartis – have signed and exchanged a
licence agreement with CCMB recently to incubate their companies at iHUB.

Union Government launches mobile app for Haj Pilgrimage

The Union Ministry of Minority Affairs has launched Mobile App for Haj Pilgrimage. The app
will provide information and facilitate e-payments for the pilgrimage. This is for the first time

digital push has been given to the Haj application process. It is also a major initiative in the
government’s ‘Digital India’ programme.

The main features of the app include applying for Haj, enquiry and information, news and
updates and e-payment. It is available on Google Play store. The application can be made
directly on the app. Using five adults and two infants can apply as a group.

Andhra Pradesh Government launches NTR Arogya Raksha Scheme

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu launched ‘Arogya Raksha’, a health
insurance scheme. By paying Rs.1,200 a year as premium one can get an insurance coverage of
Rs.2 lakh. One can become a member of the scheme just by paying Rs.100 a month and people
should register themselves before February 28 through online with Aadhaar number.

Under Arogya Raksha, end-to-end cashless services would be rendered for 1044 diseases under
secondary and tertiary care through 432 government and private hospitals.

India’s 1st gaming, animation institute to come up in Mumbai

Maharashtra government has decided to allot a 20-acre plot to set up India’s first training
institute for gaming, visual effects, animation and comics at Film City in Mumbai. The project, a
PPP between the ministry of information and broadcasting and the Federation of Indian
Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), will be set up and run by the Indian Institute of
Mass Communication (IIMC). The Rs 200-crore institute is expected to produce as many as
1,600 professionals in the fields of animation, visual effects, gaming and comics—sectors.

Government launches Swachh Bharat Survekshan 2017 in 500 cities

The Union Ministry of Urban Development launched Swachh Survekshan 2017 to rank 500
cities/towns across the country on cleanliness with a population of 1 lakh and above. The survey
will be conducted by Quality Council of India (QCI) under the Swacch Bharat Abhiyan in a bid
to encourage competition to improve sanitation. Swachh Survekshan 2016 had ranked 73 cities
across the country and Mysore was ranked onTOP followed by Chandigarh. 1 lakh citizens had
participated and gave their feedback.

Govt clears signing of agri pact with Portugal

Union Cabinet has approved the signing of an agreement between India and Portugal for
cooperation in the field of agriculture and allied sectors. The agreement covers various activities
which include exchange of scientific and technical information, trade in plants and plant
products, exchange of information in phytosanitary issues, training programmes, seminars and
visits of experts and consultants. The Group would be to monitor the implementation of the
present MoU and making concrete proposals for agriculture cooperation and develop guidelines
and priorities for future cooperation in the field of agriculture and allied sectors.

Cabinet approves MoU between India and Kenya in field of agriculture and allied sectors

The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has approved signing of a
Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between India and Kenya on bilateral cooperation in the
field of agriculture and allied sectors.

The MoU covers various activities in these fields which include agricultural research, animal
husbandry and dairy, livestock and fisheries horticulture,natural resource management, post-
harvest management and marketing, soil and conservation, water management, irrigation farming
systems development and integrated watershed development integrated pest management,
agricultural plant, machinery and implements, sanitary and phytosanitary issues.

Cabinet approves Agreement between India and Uruguay for Cooperation in Customs
Matters

The Union Cabinet has approved the signing of an agreement between India and Uruguay for
cooperation in matters related to customs. The agreement would provide a legal framework for
sharing of information and intelligence between the customs authorities of the two countries and
help in the proper application of customs laws, besides facilitating legitimate trade.

104th Indian Science Congress inaugurated in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 104th Indian Science Congress at Sri
Venkateswara University in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh. Modi exhorted scientists to keep an eye
on the rise of disruptive technologies and leverage them for the country’s growth, as he pledged

India and Kazakhstan sign Protocol to amend DTAC

India and Kazakhstan signed a Protocol to amend the existing Double Taxation Avoidance
Convention (DTAC) between the two countries which was earlier signed on 9th December, 1996
for the avoidance of double taxation and for the prevention of fiscal evasion with respect to taxes
on income. The Protocol provides internationally accepted standards for effective exchange of
information on tax matters.

16th meeting of FSDC held in New Delhi

The 16th meeting of the Financial Stability and Development Council (FSDC) was held in New
Delhi. It was chaired by Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley. The Central Government had
established Financial Stability and Development Council (FSDC) in December 2010 with the
Finance Minister as it Chairman. The idea to create it was first mooted by the Raghuram Rajan
Committee on Financial Sector Reforms in 2008.

DGFT bans import of exotic skins

The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) has issued a notification amending a trade
policy to prohibit the import of skins of reptiles and fur of chinchillas, minks and foxes. In 2014,
PETA India wrote to the Inspector General of Forests in the Ministry of Environment, Forest,
and Climate Change (MoEFCC) and spoke with Union Minister Maneka Gandhi, on banning the
import of all exotic skins and fur products. After her intervention, the Ministry of Commerce &
Industry sought MoEFCC’s comments, which agreed to ban certain items.

Cabinet approves 26% strategic sale in BEML

The government has approved of 26% strategic sale in state run BEML Ltd. The company in a
notification to stock exchanges informed that the government, ministry of defence has approved
of the strategic sale plan. At the current market pricing of ₹999.50 a share, 26 per cent stake of
BEML could fetch the exchequer over ₹1,000 crore.

Established in May 1964, BEML operates on three major business verticals for associated
equipment manufacturing — mining and construction, rail and metro and defence and aerospace.
Its turnover has risen to more than ₹3,500 crore.

EPFO makes Aadhar mandatory for its pensioners

Retirement fund body EPFO has made it mandatory for its about 50 lakh pensioners and around
four crore subscribers to provide either Aadhaar or a proof that they have applied for it till
month-end to remain the beneficiary of its social security schemes. EPFO has asked its over 120
field offices to provide wide publicity to the move through media as well as individual notes
through employers to create awareness among members and pensioners about providing Aadhaar
as their identification.

IRCTC to launch new app for booking tickets faster

Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) Limited will soon launch a new
ticketing App which will have several features added to the existing one for faster booking of
tickets.

Equippedwith the latest technology, existing IRCTC Connect will now become IRCTC Rail
Connect to facilitate the booking of train tickets in a faster and easier way, a senior Railway
Ministry official said, reports PTI.

44th New Delhi World Book Fair begins

The 25th edition of the New Delhi World Book Fair themed ‘Manushi – writings on and by
women’ begun with over 800 participating publishers from across the country and abroad.
Touted as Asia’s largest, the nine-day fair was inaugurated by Mahendra Nath Pandey, Union
Minister of State for Human Resource Development.

India’s GDP growth expected to be slower at 7.1% in 2016-17: CSO

According to growth projection released by the Central Statistics Office (CSO), India’s Gross
Domestic Product (GDP) growth is expected to grow at a slower pace at 7.1% in 2016-17 as
compared to 7.6% in 2015-16.

This estimate is in sync with the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) economic growth forecast and is
largely based on data from the first seven months of the year. The slowdown is chiefly due to an
industrial slowdown.

World Bank holds meet with India on Indus Water Treaty

India asked the World Bank not to rush in brokering a deal on its dispute with Pakistan over
Ratle and Kishenganga projects coming up in Jammu and Kashmir. India conveyed its position
during a meeting with World Bank representative in New Delhi. India asserted that the
differences between India and Pakistan can be resolved bilaterally or through a neutral expert.

IWT is a bilateral water-distribution treaty between India and Pakistan signed in 1960. It was
brokered by the World Bank (then the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development).

Air India named third worst international airline of 2016

Air India, with a nearly 39% chance of a flight delay, has been rated the third worst international
airline of 2016 by aviation insights company FlightStats. The ‘Worst International Airlines’ list
wastopped by Israel-based El Al with a 56% chance of delay, while Icelandair came second with
a 41% chance. Philippine Airlines and Asiana Airlines completed the top five.

PM Modi announces scheme for youth seeking jobs abroad

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said his government will soon launch a skill development
programme for young Indians seeking jobs abroad. The Pravasi Kaushalya Vikas Yojana
(PKVY), a skill development scheme, is aimed at boosting the confidence level of the Indian
youth, Modi said, addressing the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas in Bengaluru.

Referring to Mahatma Gandhi’s return from South Africa, Modi said this day marked the return
to India of one of the greatest Pravasis and that his government’s priority was to convert “brain
drain” into brain gain”.

20th National Conference on e-Governance inaugurated in Visakhapatnam

The 20th National Conference on e-Governance began in Visakhapatnam. A film on e-

governance “Transforming India” was screened on the occasion. Addressing the gathering at the

inaugural function, the Union Minister for Urban Development, Housing and Urban Poverty

from first day has been Minimum Government and Maximum Governance.

India, Portugal sign six agreements

India and Portugal signed six agreements – including one on defence cooperation – after Prime
Minister Narendra Modi held bilateral talks with Portugal’s Prime Minister Antonio Costa. The
other MoUs signed provide for cooperation in the areas of information technology and
electronics, agricultural trade (including market access for agricultural products), deeper
engagement in renewable energy and marine research.

BSE launches mobile app for mutual fund trading

Making trading in mutual funds more convenient for investors, top stock exchange BSE has
announced the launch of the ‘BSE StAR MF’ mobile application. The app is currently available
to android mobile users. BSE runs the mutual fund trading platform – BSE Star MF – the largest
MF distributor platform in India with more than 4 lakh SIPs (Systematic Investment Plans) per
month.

The platform provides a range of services for easy transactions and seamless order flow for Asset
Management Companies (AMCs).

Sex ratio in Haryana touches 900-mark for first time in 20 years

Haryana achieved a sex ratio of 900 girls as against 1000 boys in 2016. Sex ratio at birth in the
State this past year touched the 900-mark for the first time in almost two decades.

This improvement was made possible due to effective implementation of the law against illegal
sex-determination and female foeticide.

In January 2015 Prime Minister Narendra Modi had launched the ambitious "Beti Bachao, Beti
Padhao" campaign against female foeticide in Panipat.

Ministry of Power unveils World’s Largest Street Light Programme

Power Minister Piyush Goyal will unveil the world's largest street light replacement in South
Delhi Municipal Corporation area where two lakh led lights will replace inefficient lamps. Street
Lighting National Programme (SLNP), currently running in the South Delhi Municipal
Corporation (SDMC) area is the World's Largest Street Light Replacement Programme.

The SLNP is being implemented by state-run Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), a
joint venture under the Ministry of Power. The SLNP programme is presently running in Punjab,
Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Tripura, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Andhra
Pradesh, Kerala, Goa, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Rajasthan.

PM Narendra Modi inaugurates India’s first international exchange at GIFT city

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated India’s first international exchange India INX at
the International Financial Service Centre (IFSC) of GIFT City, saying it will enable Indian
firms to compete on equal footing with offshore firms.

A subsidiary of Bombay Stock Exchange, India INX is one of the world’s most advanced
technology platforms with a turn-around-time of 4 micro seconds which will operate for 22 hours
a day, allowing international investors and NRIs to trade from anywhere across the globe.

Two-day Digidhan Mela inaugurated in Guwahati

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has inaugurated the Digidhan Mela organized in
Guwahati. The two-day Digidhan Mela is being organised with an aim to enable citizens and
merchants to familiarize and adopt real time digital transactions. On the occasion, Shri

Health Ministry to roll out measles-rubella vaccine

India will for the first time introduce a vaccine against Rubella — a viral disease that infects
pregnant women and leads to babies being born with cardiac, cerebral, ophthalmic and auditory
defects.

The Union health ministry so far believed that the disease, also called German Measles, did not
affect Indians. Now, the ministry estimates that around 30,000 abnormal children are being born
annually because of Rubella. Many experts, however, say the accurate figure would be around
two lakh babies.

India sixth largest manufacturing country in the world: PM Narendra Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi lured investors with the promise of progressive policies while
inaugurating the eighth edition of the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit, a biennial business meet
he had launched as the state’s chief minister in 2003.

The summit, which has made headlines in the past for the staggering number of memorandums
of understanding (MoUs) inked at each edition, now aims to facilitate nearly 22,000 such deals

World’s first gender literature festival to be held in Patna

The world’s first ‘Gender Literature Festival’ will be held in Patna in the second week of April.
The Gender Resource Centre of Bihar’s Women Development Corporation will be organising the
festival. The objective of this initiative is to create a platform, to exchange ideas, and to share
and learn experiences of renowned people in the field of gender [-based or focussed] literature.
The festival will also act as a platform to increase visibility for gender equity and advocacy in
the State of Bihar.

Government releases draft Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Dog Breeding and
Marketing) Rules, 2016

The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has invited comments on the draft
notification of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Dog Breeding and Marketing Rules), 2016.
The Ministry will be notifying the proposed draft Rules in the Gazette of India for public
information. Any interested person can make any suggestion on the said draft rules in writing
for consideration of the Central Government to the Deputy Secretary, Animal Welfare Division,
Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Indira Paryavaran Bhawan, New Delhi,
within 30 days of such publication of the Rules.

Tax break for political parties legal: SC

The Supreme Court has said political parties require donations from followers to project their
political ideas and represent the people. It dismissed a petition seeking to lift “100 per cent tax
exemption” granted to political parties.

Every political party needs funds to project their political regime and political represent the
people who follow them,” a three-judge Bench led by Chief Justice of India J.S. Khehar said.
The court observed that it was up to the government of the day to decide what tax regime they
need to impose.

Telangana inks MoU with Aviation Ministry for Regional Connectivity Scheme

The Telangana government has signed a MoU with the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Airports
Authority of India under the Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS) for air connectivity by
developing small airports and airstrips in the state.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed here in the presence of Civil Aviation
Minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju and Telangana Minister for IT and industries K T Rama Rao in
the national capital.

For first time 46 UP constituencies to have Urdu electoral rolls

For the first time, electoral rolls in as many as 46 assembly constituencies spread across 22
districts in UP would be printed in Urdu as well. In Uttar Pradesh, the voters' list is generally
prepared in Hindi.

If 30% of the population of an area (assembly constituency in this case) speaks a different
language than the rest, then voters' list is prepared in that language as well. In case of UP, it is
Urdu."

NGT orders test of cosmetics containing microbeads

The National Green Tribunal has directed the Centre to test cosmetic products containing
microbeads after a plea sought ban on their use on the ground they are extremely dangerous for
aquatic life and environment.

A bench headed by Justice Jawad Rahim said that it is the duty of the government to ensure that
no "dangerous" product is allowed to be manufactured or sold to public and directed Central
Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) to analyse the products in laboratory and submit
a report in four weeks.

On-road emission tests to be mandatory from 2020: ARAI

On-road emission tests for vehicles plying on Indian roads will be mandatory once the Bharat
Stage VI norm kicks in from 2020, for which testing agency ARAI is developing a unified test
cycle. The Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) is currently working on
devising ways to determine the on-road emission benchmarks at different stages of vehicle
lifetime in the aftermath of the Volkswagen emission cheating scandal which broke out in 2015.

Khanderi, the second Kalvari class Scorpene submarine that has superior stealth and the ability
to launch a crippling attack with torpedoes as well as tube-launched anti-ship missiles whilst

Delhi Airport has claimed it has become the first aerodrome in the world to adopt unique
performance and benchmarking digital platform, Arc, which helps in tracking and monitoring
building performance.

Developed by Green Business Certification Inc (GBCI) and US Green Building Council
(USGBC), the global certifying body for all Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design
(LEED) projects, this dynamic platform at T3 would be used by airport operator to measure,
manage and improve performance of airport on resource consumption, carbon emissions and
quality of passenger space,.

NITI Aayog projects 8% growth rate

NITI Aayog has estimated a growth rate of 8% for 2016-17 as per a ‘cautiously optimistic’
prognosis it has laid out in the appraisal document for the Twelfth Five-Year Plan, flagging the
lack of reforms in land acquisition, labour and simplification of administrative procedures as
impediments to growth.

The 12th Plan is the last five-year Plan and from 2017-18, the Centre would adopt a three-year
action plan and a fifteen-year vision document. A NITI Aayog official said the new action plan
would be finalised in two months’ time and will also take into account the impact of
demonetisation.

NTPC to take over Rajasthan’s Chhabra power plant

State-run NTPC has signed a non-binding agreement with Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan
Nigam Ltd and Rajasthan Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd for takeover of Chhabra Thermal Power
Plant.

"NTPC Ltd has signed a non-binding MoU with Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Ltd
and Rajasthan Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd for takeover of Chhabra Thermal Power Plant Stage-I (4x
250 MW) and Stage-II (2x660 MW) of Rajasthan Urja Vikas Nigam by NTPC Ltd. The
Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is to take over four operational units of 250 MW

Lohri festival is celebrated in Punjab

The festival of Lohri, celebrated with much joy and vigour in Punjab, marks the onset of the
harvest season. The traditional bonfires not only keep away the winter chill, they are also used to
make offerings to Gods before the harvest. The fires of Lohri also keep away the darkness on
what is traditionally considered the longest night of the year. The day after, the northern
hemisphere is said to tilt towards the sun, bringing hope for more sunlight and warmer days.

The NDA government's ambitious Ken-Betwa river linking project, which aims at addressing
water needs of dry swathes in Madhya Pradesh and poll-bound Uttar Pradesh inter alia, has
received environment, forest and tribal clearances.

Union water resources minister Uma Bharti, also states that the clearances for the project are in a
“very advanced stage” of completion and that the government will start implementing the
national project as “model link” of inter-linking of river (ILR) programme.

India's first solar-powered boat launched in Kerala

Launching a solar-powered boat service at Vaikom in the district, Union Power Minister
Piyush Goyal had said the Centre would extend support to introduce more such boats in Kerala's
waters as it is keen to promote environment-friendly projects.

Two-day camel festival begins in Bikaner

The two-day annual camel festival began with much fanfare in the presence of foreigners and
domestic tourists. District Collector Ved Prakash flagged off a procession from Junagarh which
culminated at Karni Singh Stadium. It was followed by fun activities including camel safaris.
The festival, dedicated to the ship of the desert, will see camel dance, milking and fur cutting
design competitions and camel races.

Himachal temple unveils 1,600 kg butter idol

Installation of the idol of Goddess Brajeshwari Devi made of 1,600 kg of clarified butter in the
famous Brajeshwari Devi temple in Himachal Pradesh. The idol, being prepared by using ‘desi
ghee’ after purification with holy water 101 times by temple priests, will be open for the public
temple.

BSF launches operation ‘Sard Hawa’ at Rajasthan border

Border Security Force (BSF) has launched operation ‘Sard Hawa’ at the western international
border of Rajasthan, under which vigil will be beefed-up to check the instances of infiltration due
to the dense fog in the area. The operation will continue till 28 January.

The purpose of the operation is to keep a hawk’s eye on the international border, where vigil has

Tamil Nadu Government launches mobile app Pinakin for Tourism

Tamil Nadu government has launched a mobile application Pinakin. It will seek to provide
information of famous tourist destinations in the state. The app will provide data on other major
tourist destinations in Tamil Nadu.

Initially, it will cover world heritage tourist sites like Thanjavur Big Temple, Gangaikonda
Cholapuram, Mamallapuram and Darasuram. The app will provide information in 2 languages
Tamil and English, benefiting both domestic and global tourists. The app would provide
information on other major tourist destinations in Tamil Nadu in a phased manner.

India officially becomes Associate Member State of CERN

India became an Associate member of CERN with the Indian government completing its internal
approval procedures in respect of the agreement it had signed with CERN on November 21,
2016.

• On November 21, 2016, Sekhar Basu, Chairman of the Atomic Energy

Commission and Secretary of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) and
Fabiola Gianotti CERN Director General signed an Agreement to admit India to
CERN as an Associate member.

India ranks 92nd in 2017 Global Talent Index

India ranked 92nd on the global index of talent competitiveness that measures how countries
grow, attract and retain talent, a list topped by Switzerland.

India’s ranking is worst among the five BRICS countries. While China was ranked at the 54th
place, Russian Federation was placed at 56th, followed by South Africa at 67th and Brazil 81st.

Switzerland topped the overall index, followed by Singapore and the United Kingdom in second
and third places respectively, in the list released by INSEAD Produced in partnership with The
Adecco Group and the Human Capital Leadership Institute of Singapore (HCLI).

India ranks 60th in Inclusive Development Index

India has been ranked 60th among 79 developing economies, below neighbouring China and
Pakistan, in the inclusive development index, according to a WEF report.

second and third positions, respectively.

India ranks 78th on global passport-strength list: Survey

The Indian passport has been ranked 78 in a global ranking of the world’s most powerful
passports. Germany stands at the top with a visa-free score of 157, while Singapore overtakes
South Korea and becomes the highest ranked Asian passport with a visa-free score of 156.

India stands at 78th position with a visa-free score of 46. While Pakistan and China rank 94 and
66 respectively. Afghanistan’s is the least powerful passport with a visa-free score of just 23.

EC allocates Samajwadi Party cycle symbol to Akhilesh Yadav faction

The Election Commission (EC) has allotted the Samajwadi Party’s official electoral symbol of
‘CYCLE’ to the faction led by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav. The decision of the
three-member Election Commission, headed by Nasim Zaidi, comes after two weeks of factional
war between Akhilesh and his father and party patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav over the election
symbol.

Timothy Gonsalves committee recommends reservation for girl students in IITs

A panel has recommended reservation for girl students in IITs to address the issue of slump in
the number of female students entering the prestigious institutes. The committee is learnt to have
suggested creating up to 20 per cent supernumerary seats for girls out of the total number of
seats.

Karang in Manipur becomes first cashless island in India

Karang, a small lake island in Manipur, has become the country’s first cashless island. The

announced Karang as the first cashless island in India. Confirming it, deputy commissioner M
Harekrishna of Bishnupur district said the island fulfilled the Centre’s necessary criteria.

The Karang Island is located in the middle of Loktak, the largest freshwater lake in Northeast
India. Akodara, a village in Gujarat, had attained the unique status to be India’s first digital
village in 2015.

BHEL commissions 500 MW thermal unit in West Bengal

State-run power equipment maker BHEL has said it has commissioned another 500 MW unit of
Sagardighi Thermal Power Station Phase II in West Bengal. “The unit was the second 500 MW
set to be commissioned at Sagardighi Thermal Power Station (TPS) Phase II project in
Murshidabad district of West Bengal.

The first unit of the 1,000-MW project was commissioned in December, 2015. The project has
been set up by West Bengal Power Development Corporation (WBPDCL).

to pass a resolution to support the return of all sections of people who migrated from Kashmir
over the past 27 years.

AAI receives 45 initial bids under Regional Connectivity Scheme

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has received 45 initial bids from 11 parties to fly routes
under the regional connectivity scheme (RCS) launched last year, the Ministry of Civil Aviation

said in a statement. AAI is the implementing authority for the RCS, which aims to boost air
travel in Tier II and Tier III cities by capping fares at Rs 2,500 per one hour flight.

many as 65 airports, 52 of them not served by any airline and 13 under-served airports. The
government has now invited counter-bids against these initial proposals by February 1.

Cabinet approves MoU between India and Russia on cooperation on Youth matters

Exchange programmes in the field of Youth Affairs between India and Russia will help in
promoting exchange of ideas, values and culture amongst Youth through establishment of
people-to-people contacts and in consolidating friendly relations between the two countries.

The selections for participation in exchange programmes shall be done in an objective and
transparent manner and the outcomes of the programmes under the MoU shall be open for public
scrutiny.

Cabinet approves five MoUs with UAE

Ahead of the visit of Abu Dhabi Crown Prince, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who
will be the chief guest at this year’s Republic Day, the Union Cabinet gave its nod for signing of
five MoU with the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

• The MoUs covers bilateral cooperations in the areas of road transport, Small and Medium
Enterprises (SME), agriculture, institutional cooperation in maritime transport and
training.
• The MoU is also expected to improve cooperation in the area of transportation
technologies and transport policies and sharing of knowledge on Electronic Toll
Collection System.
• The MoU would benefit Indian SMEs and lead to equitables and inclusive development”
and provide the SMEs of both countries an opportunity to have a mutually beneficial
relation and to explore their markets.

Cabinet approves MoU between India and Vietnam In the field of cyber security

The Union Cabinet has given ex-post facto approval to the Memorandum of Understanding
(MoU) between India and Vietnam in the field of Cyber Security. It was signed between
Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), India and the Cyber Security
Department, Ministry of Public Security, Vietnam on 3rd September 2016 at Hanoi.

The MoU intends to promote closer cooperation for exchange of knowledge and experience in
detection, resolution and prevention of cyber security-related incidents between India and
Vietnam.

Cabinet approves MoU between India and Serbia for cooperation in IT and Electronics

The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given ex-post facto approval
to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between India and Serbia for promoting
cooperation in the field of Information Technology and Electronics.

The MoU aims to promote cooperation between India and Serbia in the field of IT and
Electronics, and to foster active cooperation and exchanges between the private entities, capacity
building institutions, the governments and other public and private organizations of the two
countries in IT and Electronics.

Cabinet approves Trade Agreement negotiations with Peru

The Union Cabinet has approved holding negotiations for Trade Agreement with Peru on trade in
goods, services and investment. A Joint Study Group (JSG) between India and Peru was
constituted in order to explore the possibility for entering into trade agreement with Peru on 15th
January, 2015. Both sides concluded the Joint Study Group Report on 20th October, 2016 and
agreed to carry forward the discussions on trade in goods, trade in services and investment.

Cabinet approves to augment CGTMSE for supporting MSEs

The Union Cabinet has given ex-post facto approval to the package for supporting Micro and
Small Enterprises (MSEs) – Augmentation of the Corpus of Credit Guarantee Trust Fund for
Micro and Small Enterprises (CGTMSE).

The measures would result in the following benefits:

• Lowering the level of leverage;

• Improving sustainability of the Fund;

• Augmentation of the corpus would facilitate larger flow of credit to MSEs. This in turn,
would lead to increased output and employment and thereby promote equity and
inclusiveness.

Cabinet approves amendment in Modified Special Incentive Package Scheme

In a bid to incentivise investments and move towards the goal of ‘net zero imports’ in
the electronics sector by 2020, the Union cabinet approved amendments to the Modified Special
Incentive Package Scheme (MSIPS).

The cabinet had cleared the M-SIP scheme in 2012 to promote large scale manufacturing in
the electronic system design and manufacturing sector (ESDM).

It provided subsidies for capital expenditure—20% for investments in Special Economic Zones
(SEZs) and 25% in non-SEZs. In August 2015, the scheme was amended to enhance its scope
and simplify procedure.

‘Passport Mela’ to be held in Mumbai on January 21

The government has decided to list five state-owned general insurers and said it will bring down
its stake in these insurance companies to 75%. The decision was approved by the Cabinet
Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) .

These companies are New India Assurance Company, United India Insurance, Oriental Insurance
Company, National Insurance Company and General Insurance Corporation of India (GIC). The
listing will allow companies to raise capital for expansion and not be dependent on government.

India’s longest rail-cum-road bridge to be completed in Dec

The country’s longest rail-cum-road bridge – the Bogibeel Bridge over the Brahmaputra in
Dibrugarh – is likely to be ready by December this year.

MK Singh, the deputy chief engineer of the Northeast Frontier Railway in charge of the project,
said 70% of the work had been completed.

The Bogibeel Bridge project has been 14 years in the making and has earned the dubious
distinction of being one of the slowest-moving infrastructure projects in the northeast.

Federation (IDF), this number is expected to grow to 380 million by 2025. The IDF published
findings revealing that in 2007, the country with the largest numbers of people with diabetes is
India (40.9 million), followed by China (39.8 million), the United States (19.2 million), Russia
(9.6 million) and Germany (7.4 million).

World's 1st electronic mode postal ballots to be implemented in Goa

Goa will become the first state in the country to opt for ELECTRONIC transmission of postal
ballot to service voters in the upcoming assembly polls, chief election commissioner (CEC) Syed
Nasim Zaidi. The returning officers will transfer the postal ballots to service voters by

Draft steel policy anticipates Rs. 10 lakh crore investments

The Steel Ministry has proposed setting up Greenfield steel plants along India’s coastline to tap
cheap imported raw materials such as coking coal and export the output in a more cost-effective
manner, as part of the new draft National Steel Policy of 2017.

The policy, which envisages to more than double India’s domestic steel production capacity to
300 million tonnes by 2030-31, anticipates a requirement of ₹10 lakh crore of fresh investments
to meet that goal and expects at least 11 lakh new jobs being created in the process.

Committee constituted to set rules for implementation of Disabilities Act, 2016

A committee has been constituted by the Centre to frame uniform rules for the states to avoid
delay in proper implementation of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act across the
country.

The Committee, constituted under the chairmanship of Secretary from Department of

Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD), will comprise of representatives from
the Ministry of Health, DoPT, Labour, Legislative Department, and representatives from NGOs
as members.

GAAR will be effective from April 1, 2017

The Centre has reiterated that the General Anti Avoidance Rules – aimed at curbing tax
avoidance. The General Anti Avoidance Rule (GAAR) provisions shall be effective from the
Assessment Year 2018-19 onwards, i.e. Financial Year 2017-18 onwards.

The General Anti-Avoidance Rules (GAAR), which seek to prevent companies from routing
transactions through other countries to avoid taxes, can be invoked through a two-stage process
involving a nod at the level of principal commissioner of income tax and a panel headed by a
high court judge.

India has been ranked 79th among 176 countries in the Corruption Perception Index 2016
released by the Transparency International organisation. Its score marginally improved from 38
in 2015 to 40 in 2016. India had a score of 36 in 2012. The organisation has used the World
Bank data, the world economic forum and other institutions to rank countries by perceived levels
of corruption in public sector.

service ‘Tropex’ exercise along the western seaboard. The navy’s annual Theatre Readiness
Operational Exercise (TROPEX) got underway on January 24.

TROPEX 17 exercise is aimed at testing combat readiness of the combined fleets of the Indian

The public sector oil companies such as the HPCL, ONGC and the GAIL have signed MoUs for
investing ₹1.65 lakh crore in Andhra Pradesh on several projects, many of them in the Krishna-
Godavari basin, according to Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas
Dharmendra Pradhan.Tthe importance of the Krishna-Godavari basin and the steps taken to

The guided Pinaka rocket was successfully test-fired for the second time from launch complex-

The guided version of Pinaka has been developed jointly by ARDE, Pune, and Hyderabad-based
Research Centre Imarat and Defence Research and Development Laboratory. Chandipur ITR

Govt to carefully examine CM panels BCTT recommendations

Government will “carefully examine” recommendations of the high-powered chief ministers’

panel for levying a Banking Cash Transaction Tax (BCTT) on cash deals of Rs 50,000 and above
before taking a final view on it.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu-headed committee of state chief ministers
on digitisation submitted its interim report to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The panel, among other things, recommended a cap on cash in all types of big-ticket transactions
and a levy on cash deals beyond Rs 50,000 as it sought to discourage the use of physical
currency. It also suggested a host of incentives for payments by cards and other digital means.

Revv to launch services in Mumbai, Chennai, Jaipur

Revv, the Delhi-NCR-based shared mobility platform, is launching its car sharing services in
three new cities — Mumbai, Chennai and Jaipur — taking its national footprint to seven cities.

Revv is already available in Delhi-NCR, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Chandigarh. It now plans to
expand its footprint to 20-25 cities by the end of 2017.

While Chennai and Jaipur are live already, Mumbai is slated to go live later this month.
Operations in each of the three cities have been launched at scale, with a fleet size similar to

The Deshpande Foundation, the philanthropy arm of Silicon Valley entrepreneur Gururaj ‘Desh’
Deshpande, will launch the country’s largest start-up incubation centre here (earlier Hubli),
alongside the new campus of information technology giant Infosys.

The foundation aims to promote entrepreneurship in India’s tier-II and tier-III cities.

It is investing Rs 30 crore in the centre, to be opened this September and able to seat 1,200

A nationwide Sparsh Leprosy Awareness Campaign will be launched on January 30, which is
also marked as Anti-Leprosy Day. Dr Anil Kumar, Deputy Director General, Central Leprosy
Division, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, said as many as 32,000 confirmed hidden
cases of leprosy were detected across 163 districts in 20 states during the door-to-door surveys
held last year.

National Immunization Day: 29th January 2017

29 January 2017 is National Immunization Day. President Pranab Mukherjee has launched the
countrywide programme for 2017 by administering polio drops to children aged below five years

UberMOTO launches service in Hyderabad

Cab-hailing firm Uber has launched two-wheeler aggregation service UberMOTO in Hyderabad.
The firm, which has signed an agreement with the Hyderabad Metro Rail Ltd recently, formally
launched the services.

Using the app, people can hire two-wheelers for short-distance commute at cheaper rates. The
agreement was aimed at providing the last-mile connectivity from and to the upcoming Metro

Indonesia has suspended military cooperation with Australia, which had been a close partner in

China has launched its first freight train to London over 12,000 kms away as part of efforts by

improve its dwindling exports and stabilise slowdown. The train departed from Chinas
international commodity hub Yiwu in Zhejiang Province. It will travel for about 18 days and
more than 12,000 kilometres before reaching its destination in Britain. It will pass through
Kazakhstan, Russia, Belarus, Poland, Germany, Belgium and France before arriving in London,
state- run Xinhua news agency reported.

Pak fires its 1st submarine-launched nuclear-capable missile

Pakistan has successfully test-fired its first Submarine-Launched Cruise Missile capable of
carrying a nuclear warhead up to 450km from an undisclosed location in the Indian Ocean,
giving the country a “credible” second-strike capability.

The missile, Babur-3, was fired from an underwater, mobile platform and hit its target with
precise accuracy, the Inter Services Public Relations. Babur-3, which has a range of 450km, is a
sea-based variant of Ground Launched Cruise Missile (GLCM) Babur-2, which was successfully
tested earlier in December, last year.

China has successfully sent three satellites into space in its first commercial mission using an
updated version of the low-cost Kuaizhou-1A rocket, amidst the Communist giant's determined

Pepsico sells land parcel to Wadhwa Group for Rs.190 cr

American snack and beverage giant PepsiCo India has sold a 2.5 acre land parcel in the Central
suburb Chembur to The Wadhwa Group for ₹ 190-200 crore. Pepsi had bought the land parcel
from Videocon in 1996 to set up a bottling plant for their beverage Duke’s. The factory has been
defunct since 2014. Industry watchers said that several key developers were eyeing the marquee
land parcel for its strategic location. Wadhwa Group had outbid players such as Godrej
Properties, K Raheja Corp, Mahindra Lifespace among others.

Beijing sets 2017 air pollution goal at double of WHO limit

Beijing’s air quality target for 2017 is more than double the acceptable standard set by the World
Health Organisation (WHO), the mayor announced in the wake of weeks of hazardous air
pollution in the Chinese capital.

The acceptable PM 2.5 annual average set by the WHO is 20-25 micrograms per cubic metre.
Beijing’s air quality likely improved 9.9 percent in 2016, the municipal government said in a
document, and PM 2.5 likely sat at an annual average of 73, better than the 2016 target of around
76.6.

The world has just witnessed the hottest year on record, surpassing the exceptionally high
temperatures of 2015, the United Nations weather agency reported highlighting new records in

The globally averaged temperature in 2016 was about 1.1 degree Celsius higher than the pre-
industrial period, according to a consolidated analysis by the World Meteorological Organization
(WMO), continuing the trend in which 16 of the 17 hottest years on record will have been during

First goods train from China to Britain arrives in London

A draft executive order seen by Reuters that Trump is expected to sign in the coming days would

World record set by Chinese man by wheeling 20.8 kilometres in 46 minutes

A China-made quadruped robot has walked its way on to the pages of the Guinness World
Records book for covering over 134-km in 54 hours, beating a previous record held by an
American robot.

Four-legged robot ‘Xingzhe No 1’, made by a research team in southwest China’s Chongqing
University of Posts and Telecommunications, circled an indoor track from October 24 to 27,
taking 340,000 steps before it had to stop and recharge.

India, Rwanda to enter solar alliance
India and Rwanda have agreed to raise the level of bilateral cooperation to a strategic partnership
and India extended a $120 million credit to bring over 41,190 hectares of cultivable land under
irrigation in the African country.
India's Line of Credit to Rwanda and the development of export targeted Irrigated Agriculture
Project and its expansion "would bring irrigation facilities to more than 41,190 hectares of
cultivable land", the two countries said in a joint statement and agreed to fast-track its
implementation.
India and Israel committed to strengthen bilateral relations in the field of Agriculture
Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister, Shri Radha Mohan Singh met Israeli
delegation led by the Agriculture and Rural Development Minister of Israel, Shri Uri Ariel to
discuss issues relating to bilateral cooperation in agriculture between India and Israel. Both
sides expressed satisfaction over the progress made in cooperation in the agriculture and allied
sectors between the two countries.
Under this program, as many as 27 Centres of Excellence (CoEs) in the cultivation of various
fruits and vegetables, in 21 states, are being set up, out of which 15 CoEs are complete.

China has presented an upbeat picture of its ties with India in a policy document on Asia-Pacific

India extends $683 crore line of credit to Kenya

India has announced a USD 100 million Line of Credit to Kenya for agricultural mechanisation
after talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta during
which they also decided to deepen economic cooperation, identifying expansion of bilateral trade
as a “priority”. Asserting that challenges in the maritime DOMAIN are a shared concern, Modi
said the two sides will also explore opportunities in blue economy.

India, Kenya sign MoU in area of agriculture

India and Kenya have signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in the agriculture
sector and allied sector and Line of Credit for USD100 million for agricultural mechanisation.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta held delegation level talks
and praised the strength of the re-invigorated partnership between the two countries, which
serves to increase stability, prosperity, and security in the Indian Ocean region and in the Asia-

Pakistan to renovate Katas Raj Hindu temple
The Katas Raj temple is revered by Hindus across the globe as legend has it that the foundation

Private sector Axis Bank has become the third lender in the country to announce usage of

for cross-border remittances.
Block chain technology: A digital ledger in which transactions made in bitcoin or another
cryptocurrency are recorded chronologically and publicly.

Citibank launches voice verification for phone banking

Foreign lender Citi India has launched voice biometrics authentication that would replace the
current practice of interactive voice response (IVR) for its customers. The new technology
allows clients to use their voiceprints for authentication rather than having to remember multiple
PINs or respond to questions used for verifying their identities, Citi South Asia Head (Operations
& Technology) Anand Chopra said.

World Bank drops India’s growth rate to 7 %

The World Bank has sharply cut its economic growth forecast for India to 7 per cent in 2016-17
after taking into account the impact of demonetisation and the fall in private investments. This
growth forecast is lower than the 7.6 per cent growth projected in the middle of last year.
The World Bank report said that weak industrial production and manufacturing and services
purchasing managers’ indexes suggest a setback to activity in the fourth quarter of 2016-17. The
Central Statistics Office had last week pegged the 2016-17 advance real GDP estimate at 7.1 per
cent.

Airtel launches its payments bank across India
Airtel Payments Bank (APB), a joint venture between Bharti Airtel Ltd and Kotak
Mahindra Bank Ltd, said it will spend Rs3,000 crore to develop a pan-India banking network
and digital payments ecosystem. Through their 80:20 joint venture, Bharti and Kotak aim to
disrupt a banking system that has gradually woken up to changing technology and yet incurred
heavy costs in serving customers.

ICICI blocked transactions on our payments app: PhonePe CEO

ICICI Bank Ltd has blocked transactions on payments app PhonePe in at least the second such
instance of a commercial bank trying to protect its turf against non-bank mobile wallet and
payment companies. PhonePe is a unified payments interface (UPI) app which works on the
ecosystem created by the National Payments Corp. of India (NPCI). Infosys co-founder Nandan
Nilekani, who currently serves as an advisor to the NPCI and has overseen the development of
the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), declined comment.

Mahindra Asset Management launches Mahindra Mutual Fund Dhan Sanchay Yojna
scheme
Mahindra Asset Management Company Pvt. Ltd (MAMCPL) has announced launch of Mahindra
Mutual Fund Dhan Sanchay Yojna scheme. The scheme will close on January 24 and will
reopen for continuous sale and repurchase from February 8. “The scheme is for those investors
who seek to take a calculated exposure in both equity and debt with a long term investment
outlook,” said head of sales and distribution of MAMCPL, Jatinder Pal Singh.

Airtel’s Payments Bank Starts Operation with Initial Investment of Rs. 3000 Crore
Country’s largest telecom player Bharti Airtel had said it would make an initial investment of Rs
3,000 crore to build a pan-India banking system and a digital payment eco-system. Airtel
Payments Bank became the first among several such niche banks to start operations, after RBI
handed over new permits to bring financial services within the reach of millions who still lack
access to formal banking.Airtel had last year launched the payments banks initially in Rajasthan,
Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh as a pilot project.

SBI-Omanese fund SGRF launches second India-focused Private Equity
The Oman-India Joint Investment Fund (OIJIF), a mid-market India-focused private equity fund,
announced the first closure of its second fund, OIJIF Fund II with an initial corpus of USD 220
million. The two investors in the fund State Bank of India and State General Reserve Fund of
Oman (SGRF) which have backed the first fund continue to be investors in OIJIF Fund II. The
size of the first fund was USD 100 million and closed in 2011.

PNB, India Post Bank team up

Punjab National Bank and India Post Payments Bank have signed a memorandum of
understanding, whereby PNB will provide technology platform for pilot launch of IPPB on
receipt of regulatory nod from the Reserve Bank of India. IPPB has been incorporated under the
Department of Posts with 100 per cent government equity.

2 lakh cr rupees remonetised till date:RBI

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has infused around 60 per cent of the total banned currency
notes after demonetisation.
• The RBI Governor Urjit Patel told a parliamentary standing committee on finance that the
central bank had infused new currency notes worth around Rs 9.2 lakh crore into the system.
• Currency notes estimated around Rs 15.4 lakh crore were withdrawn when the Centre
announced demonetisation on November 8, 2016.

Boston Consulting Group has named technology giant Apple as the most innovative company in

The government has said 119 banks are connected with the Aadhaar-enabled payment system
and 33.87 crore transactions have taken place through Aadhaar-enabled payment systems.

RBI Prohibits FDI in Non-Cooperative Countries

Reserve Bank has prohibited Indian entities from making direct investments in any entity located
in ‘non co-operative countries and territories’, as identified by the inter-governmental body
FATF. The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) currently comprises two regional
organisations and 35 member jurisdictions, including India, US, UK, China and the European
Commission.

India Post Payments Bank starts pilot services

India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) has kicked off its operations by rolling out pilot services in
Raipur and Ranchi. The bank will offer an interest rate of 4.5% on deposits up to Rs.25,000; 5%
on deposits of Rs.25,000-50,000 and 5.5% on Rs.50,000-1,00,000, its Chief Executive Officer
A.P. Singh said. The paid up equity of the new bank is ₹800 crore, of which the government has
already infused Rs.275 crore

FGII Enters Into Bancassurance Tie-Up with Bank Of Maharashtra

Future Generali India Insurance Company Ltd (FGIL) has entered into a corporate agency tie-up
for its products with Bank of Maharashtra (BOM), a public sector bank.

Economic Survey highlights 2016-2017

India’s economy should grow between 6.75 percent and 7.5 percent in the financial year
beginning on April 1.
The Economic Survey, which sets the scene for Finance Minister Arun Jaitley’s fourth annual
budget, forecast that Asia’s third-largest economy should steady after a hit from the
government’s shock decision in November to scrap most cash in circulation. The survey was
prepared by the finance ministry’s chief economic adviser Arvind Subramanian.

NASA to send African-American for first time to space station

NASA is sending an African-American astronaut to the International Space Station for the first
time. The traveler is Jeanette Epps, a physics and science whiz who used to work for the CIA as
a technical intelligence officer. Epps will head to the ISS as a flight engineer in 2018. Her
commander will be Andrew Feustel, a veteran astronaut. A dozen or so African-American

Scientists discover rare double-ringed galaxy in space

Scientists have spotted a rare double-ringed elliptical galaxy, approximately 359 LIGHT years
away from the Earth. Identified as PGC 1000714, it has a 5.5 billion-year-old core at its heart
that looks red and is circled by a faint blue RING. While the rings are made up of mostly of
young stars, the core is made of older stars.

December 2016 was the warmest in eight years

The year 2016 saw the second hottest December in the last 10 years in Coimbatore. The data
available with the Agro Climatic Research Centre says that the maximum temperature in
December 2016 was 29.9 degree Celsius, which was next only to December 2012’s 30.5 degree
Celsius.

New species of gibbon discovered in China

Scientists have discovered a new species of gibbon living in south-west China’s rainforests.

Although scientists had been studying the primate for some time, new research has revealed it is

in fact a different species. It has been named the Skywalker hoolock gibbon by its discoverers,

who are Star Wars fans. The name is also a nod to the fact that the Chinese characters of its

scientific name, Hoolock tianxing, mean “Heaven’s movement”.

Hand-powered blood centrifuge developed

Stanford engineers, including those of Indian origin, have built an ultra-low-cost, human-

powered centrifuge that separates blood into its individual components in only 1.5 minutes, and

may enable precise diagnosis and treatment of diseases such as malaria, HIV and tuberculosis.

Reliance Jio beats Airtel to become fastest 4G operator

Reliance Jio beat Airtel, Vodafone and others, becoming the fastest among all 4G service

providers in India in December 2016, according to data released by the Telecom Regulatory

Authority of India. TRAI's MySpeed portal had previously in October revealed that Reliance Jio

was the slowest 4G service provider in India.

TRAI's MySpeed online portal, unlike its Android and iOS app, doesn't test the speed of an

individual connection. It, instead, shows you the data of tests conducted across the country.

Physicists create a new form of hydrogen

Scientists have produced a new form of hydrogen in the lab negatively charged hydrogen

clusters. Each cluster consists of hydrogen molecules arranged around a negatively charged

hydrogen ion — a single hydrogen atom with an extra electron — at temperatures near absolute

zero.

Guided Pinaka, which has been upgraded from Pinaka Rocket, was successfully test fired from

the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur. The Pinaka Rocket Mark-II, which evolved from

Pinaka Mark-I, is equipped with a navigation, guidance and control kit and has been

transformed to a Guided Pinaka. The test firing was conducted from Launch Complex-III of

ITR. The conversion considerably enhanced the range and accuracy of Pinaka. The test firing

had met all mission objectives.

China commissions sophisticated electronic reconnaissance ship CNS Kaiyangxing

China's Navy has commissioned a sophisticated electronic reconnaissance ship, capable of

conducting all-weather, round-the-clock observation on multiple targets, the latest addition to

Beijing's expanding fleet amid tensions over its assertiveness in the disputed South China Sea

The new ship CNS Kaiyangxing, or Mizar, with hull code 856, was delivered to a combat

support flotilla of the North Sea Fleet in Qingdao, Shandong province .

SpaceX resumes flights; launches Falcon 9 vehicle on California coast

The American SpaceX rocket company has resumed flights, launching a Falcon 9 vehicle from

the Vandenberg Air Force Base on the California coast. It is the first mission by the company

since one of its vehicles exploded on the launch pad in September. The return to operations sees

SpaceX start to renew what was the original global handheld satellite phone network, run by

Iridium.

Massive gravity wave spotted in atmosphere of Venus

A massive bow-shaped ‘bulge’ has been spotted in the upper atmosphere of Venus, and

astronomers are trying to explain how it could withstand the gush of sulphuric acid clouds that

are spinning faster than the planet itself.

Their best guess is that the strange, 10,000-km (6,214-mile) structure is the result of what could

be the largest gravity wave ever witnessed in the solar system, but there’s one problem –

scientists didn’t think gravity waves could form this high up in the atmosphere.

Scientists have developed the world’s lightest high-performance mechanical watch made using

Silicon identified as ‘missing element’ in Earth’s core

Silicon likely makes up a significant proportion of the Earth’s core after iron and nickel, say

scientists who claim to have identified the ‘missing element’ in the deep interiors of our planet

that has eluded us for decades. The discovery could help us to better understand how our world

formed. The innermost part of Earth is thought to be a solid ball with a radius of about 1,200

kilometres.

World’s first IBM PC virus was released on January 19, 1986

“Brain”, considered to be the first major personal computer virus, was created on January 19,

1986, by Basit and Amjad Farooq Alvi at their computer shop in Lahore, Pakistan. From there

Indigenous fighter jet Tejas to make debut at Republic Day

Indigenously-made fighter jet Tejas will make its Republic Day debut in this year’s parade, the

Indian Air Force. The IAF will use three of the Tejas which has been made by public sector giant

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited. The IAF has contracted 123 Tejas in various configurations.

It will be after three decades that a locally-made fighter jet will fly during the Republic Day

parade. The last time an indigenous fighter jet was part of the Republic Day was in the 1980’s

when the Marut, a 1960’s design, was part of the flypast.The flypast will also include a display

by the Russian-origin Sukhoi 30MKI.

IIT Bombay to build ‘Research Park’ for startups

Students of the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay (IIT-B) might no longer need to seek

help from outsiders to support their start-up ideas, as work on a ‘Research Park’ will finally start

in 2017.

• With Phase 0 being set up in the academic area, the Park aims to establish an innovation hub

through industry-academia collaboration, build a strong industrial relationship by starting R&D

centres in the institute, and promote entrepreneurship.

• The Research Park has already successfully been set up at the IIT-Madras campus and few other

IITs across the country have been selected by MHRD for this venture.

Astronomer studies ‘habitable’ exoplanet Wolf 1061c

An astronomer has studied an exoplanet called Wolf 1061c and found that the celestial body

could be habitable.Astronomer Stephen Kane from San Francisco State University focused on

finding “habitable zones” where water could exist in a liquid state on a planet’s surface.

Examining a habitable zone on a planetary system 14 LIGHT years away, Mr. Kane found that

unlike Earth, which experiences climatic changes such as an ice age because of slow variations

in its orbit around the sun.

Massive Antarctic ice shelf ready to break

A gigantic chunk of ice that is breaking away from West Antarctica is attached to its parent ice

shelf just by a thread. Covering 5,000 sq km and nearly 100 storeys-deep, the formation is poised

to snap off from Larsen C ice shelf, creating “one of the largest icebergs ever recorded. A

widening rift running the length of the finger-shaped, 350 metre-thick ice block grew 10 km

longer some time during the last three weeks, satellite images revealed.

ISRO to launch record 103 satellites on a single rocket

ISRO successfully ground-tests Cryogenic Upper Stage engine meant for rocket GSLV-
Mark-III

Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has successfully ground tested the Cryogenic Upper
Stage engine meant for the rocket GSLV-Mark-III. In a release, the space agency stated the
indegenously developed engine, designated as C25, tested for a duration of 50 seconds in its
Propulsion Complex at Mahendragiri in southern Tamil Nadu, demonstrating all the stage
operations.

Atomic clocks of Satellite IRNSS-1A Develops Technical Snag

NavIC, the indigenously built satellite- based positioning system, has developed a technical snag
in the atomic clocks on its first satellite.In the NavIC, a constellation of seven satellites, one of
the three crucial rubidium timekeepers on IRNSS-1A spacecraft failed six months ago. The other
two followed subsequently.
Kiran Kumar, Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation, confirmed the glitch in the
clocks but clarified that the satellite was otherwise all right, and the rest of the satellites
